He's looking much better now! Most of the dark spots on his comb have completely flaked off on their own, though his wattles still have some spots that look a bit rough. Hopefully he learned from his experience when it is below freezing. None of the girls had any hint of frostbite. Even Karen...

Oops, looks like I didn't do a good job embedding links from my phone and I've passed the time window for edits. Links fixed below.

Happy Sunday everyone! Anyone else trim spurs and nails? Anyone manage to do it without making a mess? Not this chicken farmer. 😭 On the bright side, I think he's going to make a full recovery and it'll make for a silly story some day. I almost deserve to get flogged for this one.

(Thu May 1st - Day 378) Got a pallet of mulch delivered for landscaping and decided to try using some of my chicken poop fertilizer for the first time. Scooped about a half of a small wheelbarrow from where the chickens had kicked it through the hardware cloth over the last 6-7 months and...

Dark spots on rooster's comb and wattles. Frostbite?

Roughly two months later, I remembered to snap a new pic. Most of the dark spots flaked off on their own.

Hey y'all, we hit our 1 yr chicken anniversary on Sat, so I made a little post on my thread (some pics included). Wouldn't have made it without your support!

It's been a while since my last update, so I figured I'd lump a few fun anecdotes today. (Sun Mar 30th - Day 346) My junior chicken farmer was having a little fun with this egg from Dot or Spot after egg cleaning. (Sat Apr 19th - Day 366) 🎉🎉1 yr anniversary for the adoption of Angela and...

Thanks for the sanity check. Your advice is much appreciated!

    Overly vigorous young roo

9 hens. 1 roo. All about 1 yr old. I think his rooberty mating is a bit too vigorous. Is this bad enough, to require separation during feather recovery? I have never trimmed his nails or spurs. His spurs aren't "sharp", per se, but they seem like they're getting long enough that I ought to...

    Rat proof feeder options.

Saturday marks the 1 year mark of being chicken owners, so that teenager situation can definitely apply here. :D

    Rat proof feeder options.

No worries, don't take my passing comment as criticism. They jumped their way onto the roof of the coop despite it's slope and pooped on top of that too. At least that's plastic, so I think it's harmless. This makes me think I ought to do a better job of keeping their litter away from the welded...

    Rat proof feeder options.

Makes sense. I guess I knew the answer was "can't just leave it alone". I'll have to put my thinking cap and think of something. Due to laziness, I haven't got a perfect bead on exactly how much they eat every day, so I've mostly just been topping off their food every week. I'll try to slightly...

    Rat proof feeder options.

Hmm... 1 or 2 of my birds have recently started making a habit of perching on top of our feeder and popping on top of it. Do I need to stay on top of that getting cleaned off? Other than building a sacrificial roof/ledge over my feeder, I'm not sure what else I can do to dissuade them from...

    Hen laying on the ground?!

I've been doing the ceramic eggs & golf balls since they were about 4 months old, but finding eggs in their run thing has only been happening 0-1 times/month for the last 2-3 months. Usually only a single egg, too. I've seen them move eggs from nesting box to nesting box(inside the coop), but...

    Hen laying on the ground?!

Interesting. I never realized this could be an issue. I've been sporadically finding eggs on the ground when they lay in their nesting boxes 99% of the time. Figured it was adolescent mischief, but maybe it's not their fault.

Help me decide- Grandpa’s Feeder or other brand?

Stumbled across this thread, and just wanted to say that I'm a happy customer of Al's with no business affiliation. We got our flock about 11.5 months ago starting from absolute zero (chickens, knowledge about chickens, gear, etc). 1581 eggs later, my rat proof chicken feeder has been here for...

Got all distracted by a cold that wouldn't go away and then all those dust storms and fires. My flock actually put themselves to bed for about a week and I was about to celebrate. Last night, none of them went to bed, but it was the Mrs. turn to tuck them in, so it worked out alright. 🤣

Dark spots on rooster's comb and wattles. Frostbite?

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. First year of chicken ownership and we try hard to do right by them, but sometimes they make it difficult.
