Introducing a Rooster - is it a good idea?

Quote: Haha true it is a large area. I converted an old side of a barn that was just being used to store some miscellaneous stuff. Figured it would make a better chicken house than storage facility. I had about 19+ chickens in there at one point so I didn't want them to be cramped, but I moved...

Introducing a Rooster - is it a good idea?

I have about 15 free rangers that like to split into two groups so I have them with 2 roosters. I also have 9 RIR's that I let free range about 3-4 days a week the rest of the time they live in a 30x80 space I converted to a large house/run. The RIR roo is much less sexually active and/or...

    Babydoll sheep?

I have a Ram named Bo and a Ewe named Molly. I love sheep they are very peculiar animals. The one thing to keep in mind is you have to spend ALOT of time with them for them to be comfortable around you. Sheep are naturally defenseless pry animals so they will pretty much always see people as a...

These are my Brown Chinese pair that are now about a week and half old. These pictures are from when I first got them. DOG ATTACK!

Im sorry to hear that. The redness in his face may just be extra blood flow from the shock. We had some dogs attack a calf once we had to kill it. We left the body out that evening and sure enough they returned and lets just say they won't ever be attacking anything again. I am sorry for your...

Sponsored Post Congratulations MamaNini! You won a beautiful coop from Handcrafted Coops!

My best advice for raising a backyard flock is to repurpose as much as you can. It is easy to get hung up on going out and buying a lot of stuff brand new when if you look around you may already have what you need. If you are going to build a coop yourself see if you can find and old shed or...

    Roo culling went bad!

Arguably the most humane way is to ring the roosters neck. Shooting the rooster with a pellet gun is probably in the top 5 most inhumane ways to dispatch at chicken. Some people buy killing cones but dolly85's suggestion sounds about the same.

    eating the eggs

The only solution I have heard of other than getting rid of that chicken is to fill an egg with a sharp mustard such as dijon and put it in the box. Once the hen has gotten a taste of the mustard a few times she should stop. I hope that helps.

    Hawks....

I have heard of people using cheap shotguns to fire out explosive rounds. The rounds will detonate at about 75 to 100ft out and are non-lethal...but I have heard they do make a fairly good "BOOM". Hawks are not these die hard suicidal predators that will stop at nothing to kill chickens they are...
