The road less traveled...back to good health! They have lice, mites, scale mites, worms, anemia, gl

Ugh, I'm so far behind! I know this is entirely irrelevant, but it's a fun fact anyway. It's not that Mexicans have immunities to the bugs in the tap water there, it's that they don't drink it either! Not with out it being boiled or otherwise treated. Most have big office type water coolers in...

I too use an old sheep trough. My dad made many years ago, it's a large PVC pipe cut in half with wooden ends attached, it's been working perfectly. I was trying to figure out how to cover it to keep chicken feet out of the feed, but at this point I've decided to not even bother. They don't...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I have read several conflicting reports about the mechanisms of DE. The one I had decided on (though I admit I can't remember now why I gave that one credit over the others) is that the DE sticks to the waxy coating of hard-bodied insects and robs them of that protection allowing their fluids...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I don't know the reasons for it, but of my 3 hens laying, the 2 buffs are silent on the nest and the blue hen VERY LOUDLY announces when she OR any other hen is laying and she always gets the rooster bawking and pacing the coop as well. Although he didn't join in until he starting mating. And...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Well, darnit! My roo got frostbite Could it just be from free ranging out in the cold wind? There is no way it was from humidity. the coop is open air in a huge pole barn with a high roof and a too open ridge vent, plus venting under the eaves. It's just darn cold and he has a big comb. Poor...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Hey! Nothin' mean about killing vermin! Now, holding it up to be tormented by dogs, then hurling it 20ft in the air?? That's a little unnecessary. (though, I admit I chuckle when I think back on it)

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I think yes! Dad held one up by the tail for the dog to jump up and snap at one time as he walked it to the back of the field where he then threw it up and shot it out of the air like a clay pigeon. I was mad at him for being mean, but he thought it was hilarious.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Why didn't I think of that?? I do believe all of his hens are under a year old still. Ok, I'll stop worrying. The chick will either grow or not, I was just wondering if there was something I was missing.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

They are supposed to be the same breed, hatched at the same time. They definitely all started out the same size when I got them and they are all growing at slightly different rates, but this little one literally hasn't shown any growth in two weeks. I haven't been weighing him, so he may have...

Shoooot, skin 'em, grill 'em and throw 'em in the yard! I believe mine would eat it, if not the dogs will love it!

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

My mistake. They are 3 weeks yesterday. There are 3 or 4 that are considerably bigger and much more feathered out.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Thanks. I put an old metal pitchfork in there, they can roost on the tines or the handle. It has only been in there a few days, so maybe his toes will start to correct with a little more time. These are Marans, so I believe the guy could tell the difference in eggs, but who knows. The little...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I know everyone is busy with the holiday, so I'll be patiently waiting for thoughts on these fuzzy butts. The accursed "bendy-toe" I just noticed this yesterday and it must be a recent development. this is the only one with crooked toes. I read up on it a bit, the causes are listed as 1)...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

That's very likely the difference!! Pellets never smell as fresh as the cubes, must be something in the processing. Maybe the amount of heat used? I dunno. For horses we just soak the cubes in hot water for about 30 minutes or so. Might take a little longer to get them soft all the way thru the...

Better check local ordinances and make sure you're allowed to discharge firearms where you are.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Another chick question. I noticed tonight that one of them has crooked toes. I did a search but only found info on toes that curl under. These lay flat but the middle and outside toe on both feet curve outward. What causes this? Genetics or nutrition?

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Oh yeah, I hadn't thought of the thickness. Mine is fairly thick as well, so I guess I'm good. It definitely smells ferment-y. Thanks for reminding me of the obvious!!
