I stopped with the Calcium because all eggs have perfectly strong shells since last week.
Since the weather improved my hens are much more friendlier to each other again.
Hope the harmony wont change again bc we get a temperature drop here tomorrow. Maybe with hail, snow and a thunderstorm...
My husband needs me for fixing stuff (repairing things) bc he gets annoyed very quick if things don’t work out the way he wants them. :gig
I love power tools. These make the work so much easier. I never had any pallet projects though and Im not a good carpenter at all. My skills are just good...
I got it wrong. Its not a broombush but a Forsythia. A broombush is different but has the same colour yellow flowers. It stars to bloom later. Blooms in April - Mai where I live.
See the difference:

Hi, great build and welcome. I wonder, why didn’t your wife and daughter build the coop themselves ? At least I hope they helped you a lot. That way the carpentry work for the chickens and duck, can be done the other way around next time too.
Yes.
Another reason to buy very few bulbs is the poison that is used to grow them. I buy organic now. These are more expensive of course. Buts buying less saves a lot.
We used to buy daffodils every spring in a pot (home decoration). Mainly the early ones. The are called Trumpets here.
We kept the bulbs and planted them in our garden in autumn. Now we have so many outdoors, we don’t feel the need to buy more of them.
We never planted them in the middle of...
Our wheelbarrow tire was beyond repair a few years ago. I bought a flat free tire and did some reading on it then.
The material has to ‘work’ (move) every now and then. If you use the wheels only once a year the material cracks/ deteriorates . I’m not sure how often is required. A long winter...
I don’t want chicks this year. Unfortunately for them, they are broody for nothing.
I do enjoy a broody with chicks but 8 is a full house so to say. And I don’t like to have to deal with the cockerels.
I have more than enough eggs with 2 good big bantam layers and 5 oldies who do lay...
You can suffocate the mites too with oily substances like Vaseline, petroleum jelly, or soft paraffin. No poison needed.
Some people make a mix.
@Shadrach what do you use?
About a week ago the Dutchies started to lay.
Yesterday evening after dark Black didn’t roost.
#1 broody
I put her on the roost.
Today Black and Kraai both were sitting on a nest.
#2 broodies.
I closed the entrance to the nestboxes.
Tomorrow?
+ if the pullets start to lay , they probably prefer to lay their eggs where the hens do. If the entrance is blocked the pullets find another place to lay their eggs.
If you don’t want a random extra laying spot, you should open up immediately after the first egg. Hens can sleep somewhere else...
I would ad much more time every day (advice Ridgerunner is a good one imo). You can open up a whole hour to begin with. It’s probably a bit stressful for the younger pullets until they are laying. Adding an hour every day gives them enough time to get used to each other. But it’s also a...
I just didn’t understand the set up.
Giving other feed and increasing the amount of feed makes the results of the research more difficult to interpret.
Anyway, the research is too theoretical to my taste.
:gig How many eggs do you have? And how many questions?
I have a wuestion too. Are you using your Silkies as incubators?
I love your introduction. You are really a great writer. I hope you will contribute with this talent all around BYC soon!
I am waiting for the post with your questions...
Not related in ownership. Both originated in Germany. And Wikipedia says, Lidl ‘stole’ the shop concept. Probably they mean the idea to keep it very basic, sell out of cartons and try to cut in labour costs as much as possible.
