It is like that however, Boarder Collies running loose might be a bit of a stretch or very specific to your friend. If a couple loose collies, or more, happen to herd the wrong flock or worse, pack mentality sets in on flock...could be death to the dog. You definitely see dogs running around...
Persistent and opportunist! I am not a big fan of electric fencing for birds. I’m surrounded by it here in Ireland. That’s all that is used for livestock. If pushed I would probably get a couple little terrier’s and let them live outside. as many Irish do.
Give and take, everything needs to...
Part of the run is hardware cloth and part of it is not. I know that chicken wire is not the barricade that works best.
In the 6 years that I have had this run, I have had one mink attack, and this one fox attack. One year, I had a fox living in my field, in harmony with my chickens. I used to...
Two nights later I heard something being killed along the river so, I'd say the fox is sated for the time being. I am in the process of re building my coop, so now I must expedite the building.
Intercepted a fox with my fella in it's mouth! Late night, with a window open, heard my rooster squabbling. thought to myself that doesn't sound right. ran out to the coop with a light and there he was! the fox cleared a 7' stone wall. Rooster was shook, bloody head but he's ok. I spent the next...
HI there, that sounds great and fun! Start small with the number of birds and research the breed if you can before you buy, purchase, get. Loads of great help and advice here. First place I came when I started my flock. :highfive:
Thank you that was really helpful. that cockerel you have is beautiful.
Do you see the other three white pullets to be male? I think they are but I am an amateur chicken keeper. they look and act male to me. the two little black ones I am certain are female.
These birds are very nice and easy...
not sure of your set up but, separating her is a good idea. there loads of reasons why she may be breaking them. you may have to go into greater detail with your chicken situation for greater feedback.
the local vet took that pullet soon after I made this post. I ran into her about 3 weeks later; there was nothing wrong with the pullet and it was/is thriving with other birds-not just chickens.
not great images. I have a white cockerel with a straight comb and I have a black female with a straight comb. The multicolour bird is a cockerel I believe. he is the largest of the pullets. they are now five months old.
the two black female pullets are sweet and lovely. I have FOUR males now...
Hi Moonshiner, I have not done enough research on poultry in general to understand cross breeding/breeding/genetics. When I took the two hens and cock, the breeders told me that they were Polish Silkie cross. I may get in touch with the breeders again as I find the single comb odd, even without...
My Polish Silkie cross Pullets are now 5 months old. I have two pullets with no fancy head gear, just a straight comb. Is this genetics from a few birds back in mating? in this clip, there is a good close up of one of the straight comb pullets.
We are not predators. We don't have claws or fangs for a start. Humans are herbivores.
The way chickens are bred to grow quickly with hormones, some can barely even stand as they are so top heavy. They see no light of day until they're sent to the slaughterhouse. They can barely move in their...

sorry i do not know how to get you to gallery. but this member certainly will have a load of good advice.
thank you for all your responses.
I have the chick separated, in that it cannot come down from the coop. the coop is about 3.5 feet above ground. In the coop i have an open dog carrier to place her/him in if need be. the other chicks and hens do not bother the chick. the cockerel does not go up...
Silkie Polish cross
2 hens, mothers-10 months
1 cockerel-11 months
and 7 chicks-9 weeks old
they all get along, cockerel is doing his job well, all three collectively mind the chicks.
two days ago one chick began to lag behind. today i took chick to vet, as this morning it did not want to...
