It’s common for them to get too cold using a heating pad, it’s hard for them to absorb enough heat from it. In the future it would be best to change to a heat lamp or an elevated heating plate for them to go under, and watch your other chicks and the duckling carefully. Temperature changes can...
I’m not an expert but I would say that’s a quitter based on how no veins seem to be visible. If you have other eggs compare their movement and veins to that one, if there’s a significant difference, almost definitely a quitter. The embryo tends to swish around more than living ones when you move...
Hi, I don’t wanna be rude but Muscovies aren’t technically ducks and Mallard-derived ducks can’t communicate with them, so it would be just as bad as being by himself. It’s also a good idea to have at least five hens per drake.
I personally would cull a duck if they’ve gotten to the point of...
A while ago I ordered turkey hatching eggs, they arrived with slightly detached air cells that moved when they were tilted (they stayed in the general area of the wide end of the egg). I kept them in an egg carton on the pointy end for around 32 hours. They stopped moving as much so I decided to...
That musculature and blocky head makes me think English Mastiff, I also see some loose skin at the withers. From what I see in the photos it looks like he has a thick neck, which could come from Rottweiler heritage, but his chest doesn’t look deep enough for a Rott to me.The issue is those rose...
Our Salmon Faverolle hen (almost 3 years old) started showing symptoms of an issue a week ago. She stopped eating and drinking, started acting lethargic. She refused to get on the roost at night and acted uncomfortable if put up, but would stay on it. Noticed severe weight loss and head...
I know I'm a bit late to the party but the Moonbeam chickens are actually really cool and from what I've seen the breeder takes pretty good care of her birds. https://backyardpoultry.iamcountryside.com/chickens-101/developing-moonbeam-chickens/
Makes me think Silver Campine or Egyptian Fayoumi, possibly a mix. I think she’s a pullet, don’t see any saddle or hackle feathers and her comb is still pale. Breeds can be hard to tell sometimes in the teenage stage. Beautiful bird, whatever breed.
I completely understand that. I personally don’t buy factory farm meat or certain other brands of meat because of the abuse, but that stuff they inject is disgusting and so vague with the ingredients. I wish you good luck in raising meat birds. It can be hard but it’s also fun.
My Red Bourbon jake is about 31 pounds and 8 months old, he is from Cackle hatchery (I now know it’s better to get local or from Porter’s). It depends largely on the breeding stock of each variety and where they come from. Just know that young turkeys, especially heritage, eat a lot. My four eat...
An update, I did it. To two, Theodore is being very nice now that the other two are gone, no fighting has happened since. We probably will have to process him too at some point, but we’ll see if some miracle causes him to stay good, but until then, the processing supplies are set aside.
We cut...
Yeah, hopefully. I completely agree on the cull or sell aspect of raising poultry, keeps the rest of the flock healthy and happy as well, I have bachelor pens for drakes but I plan to breed them and they’ve been really nice to the hens, so they have a reason to stay, and I have three turkey...
Sorry to reply again, but oh boy, “half the birds in my flock are roosters,” is a huge red flag. Those poor hens must be torn apart.
She obviously doesn’t understand that just because they’re valued for food doesn’t mean they’re not valued for themselves, either. I sure appreciate a bird giving...
Okay, the second paragraph was immediately bull. Taking the time to bring the bird to the vet and letting them suffer is cruel. Also, acting like culling is a bad word??
By-products are still what they are, but I’m not gonna argue with that, wish I’d seen that sooner, thank you...
But they have photos of their clients surgeries and x-rays on their website and blog, and a whole database with accurate anatomy and medicine?
Do you have proof aside from word of mouth?
In my experience, in general the cheaper the feed, the more by-products. Once I bought some feed that made all of our ducks eggs taste and smell fishy. The feed had no meat products listed or unusual nutrition. The coop also smelled weird for a while.
I personally like to know what my birds are...
