    Pecking scabs??

Not sure why the photo is sideways… I have a guinea who is becoming a bit of a bully. I just noticed these black spots on this guy’s comb this evening, and I’m assuming they are pecking scabs from said guinea, but I wanted to get feedback. Hoping it’s not pox!!!

Gluten/soy free chicken feed recipe help

Soy isoflavone (the common soy allergen) comes through in eggs from chickens who have eaten soy. In fact, it can be a concentrated dose, causing a strong reaction in folks like me who are allergic to it. Regular eggs give me a terrible reaction lasting weeks; soy-free eggs, no problem! 😺

    Great book you might like!

Hello all! I bought this book years ago, when chickens were still a daydream for me. My chicks are about 6 weeks old now, and I just noticed this book on my shelf and sat down with it for a bit. Time to line the coop - Mulch vs Sand: Need your input!

That’s great - sounds like my kind of cleaning!! Do you find that your hens eggs are pretty clean with this method? That was one reason I was initially leaning toward sand - I had heard that the sand would clean their feet as they made their way to the nesting boxes, hence cleaner eggs. But, I’m...

Time to line the coop - Mulch vs Sand: Need your input!

Oh, that’s perfect actually, because what I get from our local tree guy is more of a rough mulch - fine stuff all the way up to chunks of small branches. Thanks for the info!!

Time to line the coop - Mulch vs Sand: Need your input!

Thank you for taking the time to write all this! I really appreciate the feedback. I think I’m going to go with the wood chips. They’re pretty mixed in size, there‘s some fine stuff all the way up to maybe 2x4” hunks. I’m hoping that will work well. Seem like it would be great for the run...

Time to line the coop - Mulch vs Sand: Need your input!

Well, the coop is almost finished, and I have a brooder full of chicks! I need to get flooring material down next. I was planning to line my coop with sand, and line my covered run with mulch (mixed size wood chips from a local tree guy). I was going to try to find suitable sand/gravel fines...
