    Keeping track of fresh eggs

I have 30 hens and get about a dozen a day. It's winter here in Ohio and they've just started laying again since cold days and molting seems to be over. I will start selling in the spring, but I wanted to find an easy way to track my eggs. I put them in a large basket on the counter and when the...

I need to trim my rooster's spurs, how do I do it?

I just noticed my bantam rooster has very long, curled spurs. I'd estimate they are at least three inches long. I don't have a Pic yet he's quite flighty. So I'm wondering how to trim them before they curl back into his backside. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Will her feathers grow back?

I don't believe she is. I'm not sure what to do with her red back. He really tore her up. I believe she was his favorite, lol.

    Will her feathers grow back?

I have a Buff Orpington hen who has been over mated this spring by an immature rooster. The rooster was rehomed, but this hen's feathers still haven't grown back. I'm concerned for her ability to stay warm this winter. Will these feathers ever grow back? Should I be doing something else for her...

    Pumpkin feast

My husband came home from work the other day with 4 very large pumpkins. They were so big that they wouldn't sit on our steps so he had to put them on the ground around the steps. My chickens have ignored them totally - until today. I just came out to all of my chickens feasting on the pumpkins...

Topic of the Week - Managing Your Chickens' Molt

I always get packed in oil. I've never noticed if it was smoked. Either way, the chickens love it. They gobble down 2 cans of sardines in minutes.

Topic of the Week - Managing Your Chickens' Molt

I give sardines, salmon, tuna, quality cat food, and BSF larvae. Watch for sales on canned fish and stock up. My girls also steal my dogs food when they can. Increase the protein percentage of their food too. These things all help.

Regular sized rooster + Bantam hens?

Egg is sized by hens size & weight. Big hen = big egg Small hen = small egg. Fertilizing the egg Does Not change the size of the Egg!

    Egg size?

I have a Dark Brahma rooster and a number of different breeds of hens. I incubated some eggs from my flock and now I'm figuring out the two breeds crossed within that hatch. I obviously know all have Dark Brahma, but I know at least one chick is crossed with a Blue Sex-link Easter Egger. She is...

Ordered splash maran from hatchery but colors seem wrong?

I order from Meyer, as well this year and my order contained a Green Queen, and I received an extra chick which is a Blue Splash Cochin. I wasn't sure which chicks were which until feathers and other characteristics formed. Now I know who's who. See pics below. These chicks are 8 weeks today...

Thank you for finding that about Meyer Hatchery. I'm pretty confident this is a Blue Splash Cochin. 💙

Ideas of breed? Hatchery extra with chick order.

This chick was purchased at Meyer Hatchery and was an extra to my order. Not sure of the breed or gender for that matter. I ordered all female chicks so I hope she's a she. I'm not sure of breed. It has very feathered feet and looks Blue Splash to me. The body looks more Cochin to me than...

I lost a hen for two days and she's found, but now what?

Update: My husband found her. RIP Miss Eliza. My heart is broken 💔 😢! I didn't find one mark on her. I'm at a loss!?!

I lost a hen for two days and she's found, but now what?

So she's gone again... The Lavender Orpington isn't coming in the coop at night and I haven't found her nest. This is my first hen to go broody and leave the safety of the coop. I suppose she's found a better hiding spot. I surely hope so because we have raccoons that come up to the chicken yard...
