I am sorry that you lost her in the first place. The sudden death does seem to have a better chance that it was a one off thing like heart failure or FLHS. Just know that she probably didn't know what hit her and didn't suffer for long.
It is definitely good to know the contacts and costs ahead...
Do you still have her?
The address and phone # for your state lab is in this photo of part of my necropsy report. It costed $50. and they are very responsive when called with questions or issues. (I did have an issue when they sent the bill and tried to charge an additional $50. for cremation...
Out of 5 birds that I purchased in May of 2025, I got
4 pullets about 4 weeks old and one older cockerel.
These were my first chickens:
1. Scaley: Ameraucana mix died 12/14/25
2. Dovey: Ameraucana mix died 1/23/26
3. Big Red: Sold as a Production Red but looked like a Red Comet with the...
I was unable to see a video of her.
How long have you had her?
Did you get her like this or did she become lethargic after you already had her?
When was the last time she laid an egg?
Feel her belly between her legs and under her vent.
Does it feel swollen like a water balloon compared to...
I am glad you are getting a second opinion!
Vet care is hit or miss, and from what I have been reading, it can be a whole lot of miss when it comes to poultry.
I would love to see Penny get better after having it so rough.
About the antifungal drugs: I think miconazole is the over the...
Hi.
I am sorry to see that your cockerel is having trouble with his legs.
It just occurred to me when I read this that he is the second bird from the same breeder with similar issues.
Can you rule out Mycoplasma synoviae? His symptoms match some of those.
Is the breeder NPIP certified...
I am so sorry that you and your hen are going through this. Poor baby, having to be in an unfamiliar place.
From what little reading and research I have been doing, and some experience of my own, I find that crop issues are often a symptom of other serious internal issues. Yellow urates can be...
Thank you so much.
I am glad if this information and short experience helps anyone else. I was thinking about eventually making a post about everything I noticed and experienced. I just feel like I suck at it and it will take time to put together with photos. I photographed the necropsies so...
Thank you too.
I watched that video a couple weeks ago and it is a good one. I just watched the whole thing again because it was here!
I agree with Featherbrain about how they suffer for a long time and have seen for myself already despite only having chickens since May 2025. I have performed...
Thank you for that.
I have my hopes that he will gentle a bit. I have always loved him even if he has not loved us back.
It is also concerning to see a change in his demeanor as of course he is probably very sick too. He has the stress bars on some of his newer feathers like at least 3 of my...
Update again:
The Nuzzler got diarrhea around March 2nd and that was her last egg. I dewormed with albendazole on March 4th and started corid on the 6th when she didn't improve.
I discontinued the corid yesterday evening when she became even worse and more lethargic with unsteady gait and...
I am so sorry too.
She was well loved and cared for and had a better life than most chickens.
I was really hoping for the best because she didn't look so bad in the video and Red did that exact movement simply from a feather. It must be something some chickens do when they don't feel right in...
I wanted to add that my chickens have not shown any of the common nerological or ocular symptoms and seem to have only these visceral lesions.
Scaley was the first to go. She was slow to gain weight after I had her for about a month. Never sexually developed but was probably about to when she...
I am not sure if both diseases or even other reasons would cause those. However, it is not unlike the lesions my Big Red had. We have confirmed mareks by my state lab.
My 4 girls aren't even making it to one year old. This is my first flock and I only got 4 pullets at about 4 weeks old an an...
What a pretty girl!
I am sorry that she isn't feeling well and hope she will recover from her ailments with the treatments from the vet and guidance from the helpful people here on BYC.
About the video:
I can't help but notice a similarity in her behavior to what my Big Red would do when one of...
The nesting pads I use are made of that. I guess it is just glued to a brown paper and they charge a premium for it. Thanks for the idea! I am on a mission to get some excelsior if my remaining pullet lays enough to have me run out of pads. (Mareks has been hard on my first little flock and The...
I third giving the nesting pads a try after having a nutty bird go wild in my milk crate nesting box.
I don't have the largest setup and only started with 4 pullets. I had one nesting crate in the coop and another on the ground in the run under the ramp. They chose the ground one and never laid...
Thanks for that article. I have been taking K, D, and magnesium for over a year now in the hopes that I will get some bone back or at least have halted the progression of my osteoporosis. I was already wary of too much calcium from reading about it years ago so I do not take it every day like my...
Thank you for that.
We performed part of a home necropsy on Big Red yesterday morning. We discovered that we absolutely ended her suffering.
Once we drained her and then opened her abdominal cavity it was overwhelmingly evident that her suffering was caused by cancer due to Mareks.
We...
Update:
We just put poor Big Red down today after she seemed to improve and actually ate for a few days.
I should have done it sooner but this was my first time and she seemed to get better and gave me some false hope.
She started out with being last to come out of the coop and first to go...
