Hi Everyone,
I used to be a regular on here the first couple years I had chickens. I've now had chickens for nearly 10 years and so I have mellowed out about most things... have my rhythm.
About a month ago, I was working from home, when I heard a ruckus in the backyard. At first I...
You can buy penicillin at a feedstore; usually in a refrigerator. Mine was $7.99 for 100 ml; plus 39c each for syringes. If you can't find penicillin there, you may be able to get fish antibiotics at a pet store.
I have four miniature (bantam) Appleyards from Holderreads that are now just shy of 2 weeks old. Two of them have bills that are mostly greenish, and two of them have bills that are yellow with a brown tip. I'm very curious to find out whether I have a mix of males and females!
Here they are...
Hi All, I have an order of miniature (bantam) ducklings coming from Holderread Waterfowl in early May (May 1 or 2). I am probably going to raise 3-4 of them myself, and will be looking to sell off the others for $12. each (which is what I paid for them). If you are interested, please let me...

Hey, does anyone know what IFA has this year in the way of ducks? Alternatively, I may put an order in for some mini-Appleyards or Muscovies. I haven't completely decided yet. Does anyone have interest in joining in on either?
Does anyone have fertile eggs locally? It looks like I may have a broody... back in Vermont there were some local farms that would sell fertile eggs (for eating) that I'm pretty sure were fresh enough that I would have tried hatching them.
Ideas?

She's up now, so we will see whether...
As I've been looking at real estate (to buy), I have been surprised at how many potential neighbors have chickens in the backyard, right in the city. I would say that about 1/4 of the 20-25 properties I've looked at have had neighbor chickens.

Thanks a lot PacsMan, trouble maker.... Any other knowledge out there?
ElkCove you might be able to find Sevin dust at a hardware store if you need it while IFA is closed on Sunday. Check the % recommended for chickens vs what you might...
I just put a pinless peeper on one of my gals. This seems to have restored the balance. Even with the peeper she still pecks, but there's not as much blood on everyone else's combs.
Keeping the water from freezing is a different discussion of heat than heating the coop.
My goal is to keep the coop above 10 degrees -- this is mostly through insulation and chicken body heat. I did give my chickens a 100 w heater (it is a reptile ceramic heater) the couple nights that the...
For those who don't want to take on the project to build the cookie-tin water heater (apparently for $10), you can buy a heated dog dish at IFA for $20. The 1 gallon waterer they have fits inside the dog dish. I keep mine elevated to prevent shavings into the water.
Darkroo, thanks for...
I don't know of any specific online chicken groups for Utah chicken owners (other than this thread), but there is the Utah Fancy Poultry Association (http://www.utahfancypoultry.org/). They have monthly meetings up near the State Fairgrounds, and a Spring and Fall show and auction.
There is a...
My chickens -- two separate flocks of four each -- have always "rotated" around the day, laying a little later each day (26 hour cycle), until they reach nightfall, when I thought they would "hold it" until the morning. On the other hand, I have also recently been in the coop after dark, and...

I have two silly hatchery pullets who are the opposite of each other. A scrawny one with large wattles an comb who is laying and a large girl, same age with small comb and wattles Just starting to darken. HATCHERY STOCK ??????
My late developing Welsummer Cassie is also a larger...
Well, my 33-week-old Welsummer has at least squatted a few times (two or three weeks ago) but still no eggs. Grandmaof5, your 24-weekers look closer to laying than my 33-week. I am going to start giving them some additional light -- about an extra hour or so a day.
My flock are all pullets (now 33 weeks old). I thought the three who have started laying would lay through the fall. However, production is down to about 1 egg a day.
This is a good reminder that next summer when everyone is in full swing, I need to stash 5-6 dozen in the refrigerator over...
I have a hatchery Welsummer (via my local feedstore) who is now almost 33 weeks old (7 months). Still no eggs. Her comb and wattles are still small (pre-lay look). Is this normal? Are Welsummers typically very late to start laying?
My other pullets started laying at 22 weeks (BR), 23...
