Anyone want to join me for an Earth Day hatch-a-long? I have two broody hens, so just set 4 Narragansett turkey eggs, the first guinea egg of the season (Esther is a Royal Purple and Chip is a Pearl), and 10 duck eggs. A client gave the duck eggs to my husband, and said they have no idea what...
And I know these are due to hatch well after easter, but I just had to add 12 more quail eggs to the incubator today, and then set 8 Narragansett turkey eggs under a very broody English Orpington.
Candled the quail eggs today. Two had cracks that I'd somehow missed and were leaking (got everything cleaned up and disinfected) and three were clear. But six are very much viable...their tiny tenants are bouncing off the walls. :D
Hadn't planned on doing a hatch right now, but figured I'd jump in real quick with today's Pansy and Pearl Fee quail eggs, just to make the Easter hatch. 😁
I hadn't check on the incubator for the past three days (it's in the back office), and just heard loud peeps as I walked past the door. I hurried in to find 3 very cold guinea keets, one partially out of the shell dead, and the rest of the eggs very cold. The thermostat sensor had came loose...
Had a dozen more Narragansett poults hatch out last week. And a few days ago I found a Narragansett hen that has been hiding on a clutch of eggs. I have no idea when they are due to hatch.
I've got Bresse chicken and helmeted guinea fowl eggs hatching this weekend, and Narragansett turkey eggs due to hatch on the 4th. A few days ago I found one of my Narragansett turkey hens hidden on a clutch of eggs and have no idea when those are due to hatch. And I just set 10 more turkey eggs...
Piper is setting on eight Narragansett turkey eggs, due to hatch May 6th. I moved her and her adopted eggs into a secure cage (a spare XL indoor bunny / guinea pig cage) in a corner of the barn so the other girls won't be harassing her by trying to lay in her nest or attempting to steal her...
Put together two big kiddie pools to make a brooder within a matter of minutes for the newest batch of chicks. Cheap, quick, and easy to move, clean and disinfect. And the babies have room to grow. The top pool is held in place over the bottom pool by 4 small screws which can be removed in just...
Looks like we've ended up with 37 chicks this round. Found one that had dried in its shell (looked like a grey puff ball had exploded inside the egg), but within a couple hours of me helping it out, it was difficult to tell it apart from it's hatchmates. 😊
Though after losing power for a day...
Peeked in on the eggs in the old Sportsman this evening and we have chicks hatching! :yesss:
I opened it only very briefly...but it was enough to see both chicks and empty shells of various colour English Orpingtons, BCM, at least two of the Lavender Ams and at least one Bresse.
