I got a box of chicks last month from Meyer Hatchery... One each of the following.
Blue Andalusian Female 1 $3.25
Black Australorp Female 1 $3.08
Cream Legbar Female 1 $35.00
Lavender Orpington Female 1 $20.00
Welsummer Female 1 $4.20
So, they arrived... and here in this image, I have...
Silver Laced Wyandotte
2.5 years old.
Dominant hen.
She was near the end of a very soft molt, which began in March.
She was acting normally yesterday and today.
Found her lying dead by the waterer this evening.
She was still warm when I found her.
She had bloody feathers around her vent...
1) Easter Egger, 1.5 years old, 4 pounds...
2) Kind of wheezing, labored breathing.
3) She was fine yesterday at 4pm... this morning at 9am she was not ok.
4) No other birds exhibiting symptoms.
5) There is no sign of trauma, and no bleeding
6) Overnight temps dipped into the low teens upper...
My Brown Leghorn, Zoe, was getting a little picked on during her molt... So... I made her a brown coat.
Here's an in progress shot of the breast piece from yesterday
I have two wyandottes who love to do everything together... I was watching them yesterday dust bathing and throwing all kinds of dirt and whatever else all over each other... and at the time, I noticed one of them was holding her eyes closed... I didn't think anything of it, because I've seen...
Smithsonian put out an interesting article today that included a story about a Dominique Red Rooster that escaped an exhibit and found it's way to the Inaugural Ball. I did a search, and didn't see that anyone else had posted it... so here it is.

Enjoy!
So, I've done the search on google and here, and there are so many old and dead end threads and threads with vague descriptions but no photos that I feel like I have to start another thread.
I have a 23 week old SL Wyandotte who I noticed today has a few dark spots on her legs.
(the color...
I did it. Living in the city, raising meat birds are permitted, but under the age of 16 weeks. Roosters are not permitted. This was an accidental Silver Laced Wyandotte Rooster. He hadn't crowed by the time he was 16 weeks, so we let him grow until he did. That was yesterday morning. He...
Yes, yes... the ventilation page... it's great... but for some of us, a visual is handy. So... I created a 3 minute video today.
Because I am (a little) unclear on where the line is between a draft and a proper amount of moving air... I come here asking if I accurately demonstrate the...
Hi guys... I searched the forums some, and I didn't see any threads really addressing my questions:
I am a first time chicken owner. I raised 8 chicks, purchased as pullets, and one naturally turned out to be a Roo. Ain't he purty?
He's 14 weeks old, easily twice as big as all of the...
The husband and I saw this...
And thought... why not combine it with this "gravity-actuated" locking mechanism:
So the husband asks... are roosting birds ever spooked off of their roost by predators or whatnot? If so... would this defeat the purpose of the chicken operated door?
So, I am a first time chicken owner, and am really enjoying watching my little ones grow up. But I am having a really hard time learning how to describe them using the correct terminology. I have looked and looked to see if I can find a page or a thread or another website that can illustrate...
The Easter Eggers
Blue/grey Easter Egger Pullet
Very dignified little chicken. She has her spot on the roost. I suspect she is fairly high, if not highest in the pecking order thus far.
Chipmunk Easter Egger Pullet
The most confident and friendly of the EEs. Always running along side the...
Greetings!
After a year of gentle prodding, I finally convinced my husband that keeping some chickens would be a sensible idea... And then I got my neighbors on board... They are actually very excited. Originally I was planning on 3 - 4 just for my husband and I, but then thought, well, should...
So... nearly all of the chicks are facing right and looking at me out of their right eye... the one that is facing left is the one I am starting to wonder about. I have no experience, and realize it may still be too early, but I will welcome any experienced eyes regarding this little one...
Hi... So I did it... After about a year, I managed to wear my husband down and get him fully on board with the idea of raising chickens in the back yard for eggs. Part of my strategy was to find a local (but unreliably available) source of farm fresh eggs and then express complete and total...
