to add or not to add (chickens that is)

Recently I lost 3 of my size 5 flock. Replaced 2 from another flock today. Good amount of healthy pecking order going on. Was going to add one more from a different flock tomorrow... wondering if I should hold off till things settle in a bit or just get the 3rd and let things sort themselves...

    Geico car insurance hijack :)

OK. going to hijack the thread for a sec... Now that I own a new toaster (KIA soul), I've been shopping around for insurance (presently with Progressive). Geico is the least expensive by a long shot...like 33% cheaper. Anyone have any experience with them on either side of a claim? They are so...

    Good Brand for Poultry Nipple?

I'm pretty much sold on the nipple waterer idea, but not sure which one to buy... I'm sure some must be better than others... read some "dribble" or downright leak. Any one have brands to stay away from or good success with one? Thanks mo

I hate to start yet another smelly coop thread,but...

I think I have a somewhat unique question. First the facts: I set up my 4'x4' coop as my brooder 3.5 weeks ago. 5 chicks. Shavings 3-4 in deep. DE rather liberally weekly. 32 ftsq of run. Chicks spend days in run and nights in coop for the last two+ weeks. I "turn" shavings every couple of...

    Is all DE "food grade"?

I have found a 25# bad of DE for $13 no shipping charge. The web site doesn't designate food grade or not. Is there such a thing as DE that isn't food grade? (it is packaged as an absorbent) If so, does it need to be food grade if I"m not putting it in their food? thanks Mo

Ok. Totally sold on using DE... How do people apply?

My 5 chicks are 2.5 weeks old and have been in the coop for 2 weeks. Thinking it is about time to apply DE to the bedding. Coop is 4x4 and litter (pine shavings) is about 2" deep. How much DE should I use, how often to apply, and what methods do people use to apply it? Also any thoughts on...

    I'm sure I'm just being a worry wort....but...

I have 5 chicks that are all 12 days old. From day 6 to day 12 all but one of the chicks have just about doubled in size (3 EEs, and an Australorp). The red sex link, however, has barely grown at all in the past week. She was and continues to be the most curious and adventurous of the 5 and...

    Looks like a cool fount.

Anyone ever use a waterer like this? Can you see any downsides? 1.5 gal. It has an optional cone to prevent roosting. http://www.lcsupply.com/Galvanized-Water-Fount/productinfo/HWF/

At what age do chicks typically figure out the ramp to the pop door?

So here is a rather random question... pre-planning of sorts. What is the youngest you have seen a chick figure out a ramp to a pop door? Mind you mine are brooding in the coop. I'm wondering when I can give them the run of the run (ability to come and go from the coop as they please). At 1.5...

    Organic vs. Regular chicken feed...input?

Name of thread says it all... Leaning toward organic, but totally undecided at this point. They are currently on organic starter. Mo

Silly question perhaps... chicks disregard all treats

So, I have 5 10day old chicks. Thought I'd try and spice up their life a bit by giving them a treat... gone through hard boiled egg, clover, plain yogurt and cut grapes. They had exactly zero interest in all of them. I tried offering in the palm of my hand and also just left in brooder in small...

Chicken-vention... what inventions have you come up with? (Pic heavy)

I'm going to coin a new term... unless of course it is already out there.... Chicken-vention: a device, adaptation or tool developed for byc's in the comfort of one's home, garage or workshop. ie. clever doors, feeders, brooders and the ilk. What have you designed/made? here is my first...

    Roost spacing

I have a 4x4 coop and want to put two 2x4 roosts in it. Being limited on space, I am wondering what the "minimum" distance between them can be ...1.5'? thanks mo

Small coop finished - Studio 54 (pic heavy)

4 weekends... $375 for coop and run. Coop is 4x4x4 and run is 4x8 plus 4x4 under coop. Brooding chicks I got last night in coop. a simple start coop with nest boxes that mid construction were removed and replaced with external nest box (see final pics) Base...

safe temp for 1 week old chicks?

My chicks are 1 week old today. I am brooding them out in the coop. it's 90 now and no signs of any stress. My guess is it will hit 95-97 in there today. Too hot? It's super easy to bring them inside for the afternoon. mo

Chicks not seeming to figure out where food is.

I just got 5 chicks. They are 5 days old today and up until yesterday were in a different home using different starter than I have.I've had them for about 16 hours and it seems they haven't figured out the whole feeder system thing. This am I put some starter in my hand and offered it to them...

We got a shipment of EEs and two of them are white. Is this typical? how do these hens feather out in the end? Pure white like a leghorn or mottled with another color? Can anyone direct me to pics? mo
