One of our hens disappeared several weeks ago - we thought she had been nabbed by a predator (we free range).
We finally found her under some old boards on a nest of eggs. Unsure of when they were due to hatch, we left her alone and just monitored her.
The next day after we found her, 5 chicks...
Hen setting on eggs, hatched 5 of the 13 yesterday morning and left the nest. Kids moved hen and chicks into a safer spot (we free range) and moved the rest of the eggs too just in case she was scared off the nest.
She didn't return to setting on them, of course. So last night we were going to...
NEW to ducks and geese - our 3 ducks and 2 geese that are 12 weeks old.
We free-range our chickens, turkeys and guineas - and I mean, free range (no fences). We coop everyone up at night, they free-range during the day only.
At what age can ducks and geese safely free-range?
Right now we...

Hello! I have some broody hens and I would like to have them hatch out and raise some meat chicks. Either Cornish Cross or Red Rangers, does anyone have any recommendations where to get some? I checked Murray McMurray and Efowl, and wow, they are expensive, over $4.00 per egg!
Thanks all!
Hello! I hope this is the appropriate place to post this topic :)
We built a new chicken house this year, but didn't have the chance to build the partially covered run.
We free-ranged our chickens all summer and fall, and regardless of weather conditions, they preferred to come outside than...
As you can see from the pictures, we are having a HUGE problem with food waste! We are feeding a mill-grind complete layer mix. I am wondering is it the type of feeder we are using? Is it too high or too low (I think too low) from the floor? Could it be the type of feed (too fine?). I bet...
Hello! We had planned on getting heritage turkeys from Porters Rare Heritage Turkeys next spring but I was going to wait until after Christmas to order.
I got on his website today to show my husband some of the breeds I was considering and he is already booked until the middle of June!
I...
I have 4 silkie chicks that are just over 12 weeks old. I am hoping someone can help me identify if they are roos or pullets :)
White silkie #1 "Blue"
White silkie #2: "Snowball"
Gray Silkie #1: "Tiny Tot"
Gray silkie #2: "Fluffy"
Blue is the only one with a bright...
My goal is to raise my own meat chickens. I have a variety of dual-purpose hens and would like to get some advise as to which breeds of roosters would help produce a faster growing, good sized meat chicken.
I currently have a mutt roo that will be going to freezer camp as soon as my secondary...
We have 5 BBW turkeys who will be 14 weeks old this wednesday (the 3rd). They are just now all of them getting big enough they are not able to climb through a stock panel (they were pretty diverse in size, 1 huge, 1 large, 2 medium and 1 small - now they are evening out a little with 2 large...
I hope this is the appropriate section to ask this question.
We live in Idaho - our snow levels average between 2-4 feet. We built a new coop this summer, but do not have any runs built yet. Our chickens have been free-ranging.
Anyone live in snow country and free-range their chickens in...
We got 5 CX and 5 Black Broilers at the end of June, which we just processed the other day (all except one of the broiler roos I kept to see if I could use him over my DP hens to make some meatie chicks).
I wanted more than 9 birds in the freezer because I would sincerely like to not ever have...
We have 9 older hens and a rooster in our old coop. They are let out every morning to free range and locked up again at dusk.
We have 20 chicks and 5 BBW poults that are 11 weeks old in our new coop, along with 13 chicks in a seperated brooder space that are 7 weeks old as well as an 8 week...
We decided it was time to process our Cornish Rocks from Ideal Hatchery, hatch date June 27th, so they were 10 1/2 weeks old. I wish I had a scale, but we don't, I can guestemate they were between 7-9 pounds each, butchered weight, sans giblets.
After we got the Cornish Rocks processesed, I...
Hello! I have 5 BBW turkey poults that are 9.5 weeks old in with same-age chicks. The turkey poults eating the chicks poo. No blood in the poo, they have all been raised together and on the same high-protien feed that our local mill has always fed their turkey poults and chicks (meat...
For my first order of chicks at the end of June, I purchased the Brinsea EcoGlow 50. I loved it! I didn't have to worry about so much light, too much heat, too little heat, fire, etc.
When they got bigger and started getting up on top of it, I started taking it out of the brooder and...
In my last order from Ideal, I ordered 3 "Rare Breed Special Pullets". The day that they shipped them they gave me a call to let me know a couple of the other chicks I had ordered didnt have good hatches, so while I had the lady on the phone I asked her if I would know which breeds were in the...
When I placed my last order with Ideal, I ordered 1 each White, Gray and Partridge pullet. They called me up a few days later and said that no Partridges would be available, so I picked a Golden Laced. The day they shipped, they called me again and said the Golden Laced hatch did not go well...
Ok, so long story short, my Dad surprised me one day with my Mom's old Brower incubator and a box of 22 turkey eggs.
I didn't really want to incubate eggs, but we set it up and I started reading. Temps up and down, humidity not stable, turning the eggs like a slave 3-5 times a day...
