As if my chickens weren't enough....

We have managed to take in an orphaned calf I really wanted to say no to my father when he called & asked if we wanted it. I know he meant well, since my 14 yr old is alwyas dropping the hint that she wants to raise one. We were ill equipped for one & are now bottle feeding this cutie Was...

All it took was a move to get things going!

Last weekend we decided to reaarange who was where...moved the three mallards to the pen I hate the most. Swapped the Silkies out from that pen to where the ducks were and moved the Brown Leghorn & two Anconas to one half of the new coop we just built. Lo and behold two days after doing this...

Our new babies out for playtime

Just had to share a pic of the newest members of our flock...we let them out for a little free time while we cleaned their brooder yesterday Silver Leghorns, Lakenvelders, Silver Laced Wyandottes & Delawares. The SLW's are quickly becoming my favorites...wish I had gotten more.

My first injury from one of my chickens

And in her defense, it was miscommunication between hubby & I that caused it. We have three pullets & three Silkies that share a haphazard pen. I've been asking hubby to build a door for it, so it's easier to get in & out of as I'm starting to free range them now in the evenings. He clipped...

Starting to worry about chick delivery

I have an order of chicks coming from McMurray. I scheduled the delivery for Monday. Just checked my account & it says they shipped today & are scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday! Gonna perform my first bumblefoot surgery tomorrow

...well, hubby is going to do it & I'm going to supervise My new Blue Silkie roo I got yesterday at the auction has bumblefoot, so now I see why they got rid of him It actually looks like he has it on both feet, even though his left is the only one he's limping on. Just couldn't resist...

We raise lionhead bunnies for our girls to show in 4-H & went to pick up some new ones we're adding to the family and turns out the lady also raises Silkies and had some chicks for sale (I'm a sucker for Silkies). I just couldn't resist getting two...even though I have 27 different chicks coming...

We lost a hen today :(

She was acting fine yesterday & this afternoon she was dead with an egg stuck up in her. I hadn't noticed any telltale signs of her being egg bound, so this was a shock. Sad day in our household that's for sure.

    Sad day

My daughter was so excited that one of her mallards has been sitting on five eggs, not too far from hatching. We got home today & she found a black snack in the nest, having eaten four of the eggs. Now the momma duck refuses to sit on the last egg. My daughter is heartbroken.
