is there any domestic bird that eats squash bugs? My chickens won't touch them. I'm curious if ducks or guineas eat them. Does anyone know? I have given up growing squash because of these blasted bugs!!! Thanks! Wendy
I have a source for chicks from black sex-link hens & barred rock rooster -- am I right that I can't tell the chick's sex because they are a hybrid? Other than not being able to sex the chicks, this seems like a good cross to me -- any thoughts?
Thanks, Wendy
I know people have mixed feelings about crows, but my hubby thinks they are the coolest, smartest birds, so he started feeding them. He started by walking out on the deck, throwing out some grain, and calling "CROW-CROW!" whenever he saw them nearby. It didn't take long for them to figure it...
Several of you have asked about my avatar -- this little chick did not have a medical condition; nor was he injured (except for a blow to his pride, perhaps!). I fashioned the diaper out of a Kleenex & photographed him for a baby shower invitation. It was a huge hit, and the new mom has a...

Years ago, oyster shell came as "flakes". We gave it to the hens free choice and never had thin-shelled eggs. Now I can only find oyster shell in pellet form, and the hens don't seem to eat it as much, and we get some thin-shelled eggs. Where do y'all get the "old fashioned" oyster shell...
I just joined this forum tonight & look forward to learning and sharing ideas!
I have raised chickens on a small scale for about 25 years. I live in middle Tennessee and currently have 16 barred rocks. They are my favorite breed--they are the calmest, sweetest birds! and they don't fly out...
I have been thinking about designing a henhouse with 2 fenced yards. Run the chickens in yard A and grow a garden in yard B. Then, the next year, run the chickens in yard B and the garden in yard A. It seems to me the chickens would fertilize the soil & eat all the weed seeds & scratch it up...
