    Breed/Color/gender guesses?

Back again! The "Trio" as I've been calling them, although it's highly doubtful it's a true trio (two pullets and a cockerel,) are about 5.5 weeks old. Buffy (everybody has at least one chicken named "Buffy," yes?) the little buff cochin I'm fairly confident is a pullet, the other two are still...

    Cream Legbars

There doesn't seem to be a dedicated just "Legbar" thread, or at least a recent one, and I'm not real sure if this fits better here or in the General Breed Discussion forum. I'm having trouble finding any sort of SOP, especially pictures, for Legbars since they are not recognized by the APA...

Bantam cochin - boy or girl?

I'm leaning toward cockerel for the buff, not only because the comb is reddening up (these are a month old) but also because he "challenges" my hand. I was calling him Buffy, but because of this and also because he has the endearing habit of flying up to my wrist like a falconer's bird, I'm now...

    Bantam?

These came out of the bantam bin at TSC, but the older they get, the more I have my doubts. Is it normal for OEGB to be this big? Never having had any before, I have no idea. The little buff cochin in the back was purchased at the same time and is maybe 1/2 to 2/3 the size.

I'm going on an (Bantam) adventure!

Pippin (tentatively), is the lone survivor from a batch of 14 shipped eggs. My trials and tribulations are in the June, 2025 Hatch-a-long. Long story short, the Hova-bator 1602N incubator I used would not keep a stable temperature. In retrospect I think I might have gotten a 50% hatch if the...

    Cuddle Puddle!

These girls aren't too old at a bit over 3 months, but apparently you're never too old for a cuddle puddle.

    Limping Pullet

P!nk has been limping for about a week now, reluctant to come down or up the ramp, and not really wanting to put weight on one of her legs. Of course, you usually think the first and worst ("OMG! Marek's!") Mr. RoseHawke is usually the one to let the girls out in the morning, and they're usually...

    RoseHawke's Hatching Journey

I decided I might want to make my own thread as a way to keep my observations regarding this venture all in one place should I ever decide to repeat this madness again ;) with this same incubator. The incubator in question is a 1602N Hova-bator with fan and Incuturner. This is the setup as of...

New Dust Bath for the Girls

I had wondered if the Chicklets were actually consuming all that grit I had in the little (about the size of a rabbit crock) rubber bowl as it was going down awfully fast. Then the other day I was watching them as I pottered about in the veg garden and saw Skye "dust" bathing in it. She barely...

    Back in the game

In January of 2022 my small flock of four Legbar and Legbar mix hens were the victims of stray dogs (RIP Missy, Osgoods One and Two, and River Song.) I was heartbroken and just couldn't face up to trying again as it was also about this time that I started having issues with my back. Finally got...

    Fishy tasting eggs

This has just become an issue. After a bit of research, it's probably a combination of their genetics and definitely their feed - Layena Omega-3's - which has flaxseed as the source of Omega-3's. My question is how long might it take after changing their diet will it be before the girls' eggs...

How to DIY no roost for buckets?

I've spent a couple hours googling and looking for a decent DIY solution to this problem. There's got to be something cheap and readily available that I can use to keep the girls off the top of the 5 gallon bucket I'm using for their feeder. I've done a cursory search of the forums here as well...

    Quick and Dirty Coop WIP

Well, maybe not so quick, and hopefully not dirty, but I sort of put the cart before the horse and have eight Cream Legbars that need to be out of my shop soonest. Bit of a problem these days in that I'm pretty much having to build this coop around what I have, and what I can get and also of...

    Cream Legbar Chicks

My CCL chicks are three weeks old now, and the three that I'm fairly certain are males are way behind in the tail department. I just thought this was an interesting difference and was wondering if this pretty much always happens, that the pullets grow out their tail feathers long before the...

Cream Legbars - do I have it right?

I divvied up the chiclets this morning, taking my best guess as to which are cockerals and which pullets. The four I'm pretty positive are cockerals, the seven are pullets although there's a couple in there that I'm not 100 percent sure. Would sure like some second opinions!
