    Uropygial gland dysfunction/removal

Has anyone had any experience having their chicken's preen gland surgically removed? My 4 year old silkie hen has always had issues with it(she has extremely thick, chunky gland oil, and I've had to regularly express it in the past). Recently, one duct was completely obstructed, and the gland...

    Rescue chick, cloudy eyes,

When the local big box farm store gets chicks with issues, they call me. Usually, it's something simple, like spradle leg, but today I got something completely different. The baby died shortly after arriving, but I want to know if this is something I now need to worry about in my birds. I took...

    Is this a slipped tendon?

Got a call yesterday from the local Stockdales that one of the new chicks wasn't walking. I picked it up, and initially thought it was a a spraddle, but now I think it may be a slipped tendon. Here is a pic of how she holds it.

    Dumped Brabanter rooster!?

I frequently take in dumped/unwanted fowl of all sorts (typically Pekin ducks) but today I had a huge surprise waiting for me. It was a Brabanter rooster! He's a bit banged up (presumably from other roosters), and skinny, but seems to be lively. He's extremely sweet, and sat in my lap for almost...

    Rescue pullet with backward leg

About a month ago, I was given 8 young pullets from the local TSC that were limpy or otherwise compromised. 7 of them are doing great, and completely healed, but one looks like her leg is on backward. She may have slipped a tendon when she was very small that wasn't corrected quickly enough, or...

Rescue chick/pullet with a leg issue. Pics.

So the local TSC called me about some injured chicks they had. Most ended up being fine, but one has a wonky leg. I was putting her in a sling in hopes of stretching it in the right direction before hobbling her, but now she has a big hematoma on the hock. Is it an old slipped tendon? Is there...

HELP! Silkie rooster suddenly very sick!

Friday afternoon my silkie rooster was doing great. I was out of town until this afternoon, and he's been in rough shape. My husband said he seemed cold yesterday, so he put our roo in a clean, small box with towels to keep him warm (it didn't get below 50*F, but it was rainy). He has very...

    Why don't my chickens preen?

I have two silkie bantams, a girl that fell off a truck, and another rescue girl. Everyone is less than 6 months old, and this last molt has been ridiculous! I ended up preening everyone! The silkies started looking like Pinhead from Hellraiser! What the heck?

New rescue- blue splash with orange eyes?

An employee at the local zoo found this pretty girl limping along the side of the road and picked her up, so I took her in. We're working through some respiratory stuff, but she's pretty healthy, and extremely sweet otherwise. I just can't figure out what she is![/IMG][/IMG]

    Singleton hatchling rescue-need tips!

I work with a local wildlife rehab, and typically take any precotial birds. I just got a newly hatched Bobwhite, and this little one is like nothing I've had (I've even done Killdeer successfully!)! I don't think he's eating, but I I do have him in an incubator, and he is extremely active. I've...

Lonely Brown Chinese Goose in Rockford, IL

Neighborhood dogs got into my father-in-law's goose house a fewnights ago and killed all but one of his brown chinese geese. The one left is very lonely, and he is willing to re-home for free to another flock. This year's hatch. PM, call/text 219-730-4754, or email [email protected]. thanks!

    Goslings preening until wet??

OK, one more question- both of my 5-day-old Sebastapols are preening a spot on their own backs until it's all wet. I don't think they're pulling out fluff, and they get a couple hours of outside/grass time, plus they're out with us most of the day, so they get a bunch of stimulation, I think...

4 day old Sebastapol baby with a bloody "umbilical" stump

I got two 2-day-old Sebastapol goslings 2 days ago. The little girl had a "stump" and I understood that it should fall off after a few days. Today I noticed her bill had a bit of blood on it, and there is blood around the stump. What to do?? Pics in a bit when I can get a good one.

    Co-op layer crumbles bleaching towels?

So about a week ago I switched my now 5 week-old Runner ducks over to layer crumbles. I got the co-op brand, since it was my only choice, and the area around the feeder on the towels I use is now bleached! It wasn't happening with starter crumbles of the same brand, and it isn't bleached out...

So I have a few more questions I haven't been able to find answers to (4 week old Runner ducklings)

So I feel as though I have got a pretty good handle on this duck thing so far, lol, but I have a few questions that I can't really find good answers to. I have 5 runner ducklings that will be 4 weeks old tomorrow. 1. Can they eat too much? Their gizzards always seem so full, so I worry about...

What is this noise my baby is making?

So a let the ducklings (3.5 weeks old) take a bath tonight. They LOVED it. About an hour later, we were snuggling on the couch, when one started sort of coughing? I got a short video. Sorry it's hard to tell what's going on, but you can kind of hear the couching from the grey duckling. He/she is...

Dead 2-day-old Runner Duckling, no idea what happened...(cross-post from Runner Duck Club)

So Tuesday night I went to pick up my newly hatched Runner Ducklings from the farm. When we got there, there was one that had just hatched earlier that day still in the incubator (Everyone else in the clutch had hatched either Sunday or Monday morning). I was so excited to truly be the first...
