If fertilized eggs are only viable for a week or so, how come a hen can have 15 chicks in 1 clutch once she gets broody?
I am marking the eggs that are being laid, there are about 10 or so now (I took about 10 out yesterday that I thought were "too old"), I don't think they are all from 1 hen...
Hi there,
So last week and the week before, 2 of my Bantams laid eggs (the one had been a mom before and the other is new to this). They are free range chickens and are out all day, I leave their barn door open all day and only close it once all of them go in to roost.
When there was a...

Spices little comb has turned pink within 1 day (but hens and roo's have pink/red combs when fully grown). Do feathers of dutch bantams give you a clue?

Hi all,
I have 3 young silver sebrights, 1 young dutch bantam roo. 2 x 2 week old Dutch bantams, still in a brooder inside (hopefully hens) and 7 golden sebrights adults.
I am getting a pair of Rhode Island Red cross New Hampshire tomorrow.

I see some peeps are using river sand. Is it good? I have wood shavings, (we call it saw dust), but haven't covered the entire floor with it. Should I?
I have...
Well at lease that is what they look like to me!
I think I have 5 roo's in the 1st pic and in the 2nd pic, 1 little roo. I am absolutely CLUELESS.
Do any female sebrights get combs/wattles? I have NO idea what their ages are either. Any guesses?
