Story about ducks and family I was told long ago

I never knew my Grandfather. I was 1 when he passed. I have heard this family story though. One day my Aunt and Uncle and their many children were visiting the family farm. Everyone was excited that they had new ducks that day. Someone came up to my Grandfather when he came in from the...

    Looking for Breed Coloring chart

I thought I had subscribed to a specific thread that had this wonderful chart on it. It was in table format. It showed what color roo over what color hen would give you what color chick. It listed different breeds such as Favorelles, Columbians, Australorps, Wyandottes, etc. I've tried the...

Recommendations for good online divorce support group

I'm in the beginning stage of divorce. I don't want to join a group that is all about bashing the other spouse. I just want to get over the hurt and move on with my life.

Lesson learned about giving yogurt on a hot day...

I have one EE that is a pig! She must have eaten too much and saw her regurgitating at roost time. Sister in law was there and vomited her a bit and we put her right in front of the fan for a few minutes. This morning she had an empty crop and was looking just fine. Won't risk that again...

Wish I would have had my camera!

I went in to the coop last night for a final check after taking 91 year old mother-in-law out for a birthday dinner. I have 11 week olds and 8 week olds who have been integrating for the last week or so. They were ALL on the top roost last night! Previously the littles would stay on the...

How to entice chicks out of the coop, in to the run for the first time?

The run is finally ready for the chicks. How do I get them to go outside without forcing them? Do I just open the pop door and wait it out? I tried calling to them from outside and they would come close to the door, but not come out. I threw some grass in the coop last night and they...

    Greens for Chicks

I am growing some greens for the chicks. I have 2 week old chicks. Is it too soon to give some to them? This picture is old. The whole box is actually filled with the greens now. Lettuce, spinach...

    Available space...just thinking out loud....

So, the coop is 10' x 16'. Roosts are set. Fan in place. No nest boxes yet as they are still only 6 weeks and 1 week old. We just set the posts for the run and the area is 40' x 40'. That means that my 26 hens should be pretty happy once all is said and done, yes? And that I can control...

    Predator prowess

My husband thinks this window is too high off the ground to need hardware cloth. I disagree. I think it's about 8' up. What are your thoughts?

    Dried fruits and nuts

I don't see things like dried apricot, banana, and nuts (like what you get in a Christmas tin of mixed fruit and nuts) on the treat chart. Should I assume these aren't good for the chickens?

    Painting the coop

Would it hurt the chicks (4 weeks old) if I painted the outside of the coop while they are inside? Sorry if this is a silly question...

    Veggies from freezer

When you say you give your chickens veggies when you are cleaning out your freezer does that mean the veggies are freezer burned. Is that ok to give to them?

Confused about difference between blades of grass being bad but weeds not?

I've done the search on how their crops can be impacted with blades of grass but weeds seem to be ok for them? I can't wrap my head around how giving them dandelion weeds is ok but stay away from blades of grass.... Aren't dandelion and other weeds bigger than grass? Mine aren't home yet...

Hiya! New to BYC and new to chickens

My name is Temmy and I'm already a victim of chicken math. I'm from SW PA and live on a small farm which includes Hubs, cows, pigs, goats, cats, dogs and now chickens. I've been asking Hubs for chickens for years, but he was always too busy to help with the set up. This year I sort of...
