About 9-10 weeks old, has not started crowing yet, but already is very alert and watchful of the others. I am in a no-rooster area and cannot keep him.
The original plan was to process cockerels, but Birchen Marans are rare and it seems to be a waste to eat such a beautiful bird if someone else...
HI! I'm new at this, and I have 5 chicks. I've taken my best guess on each, but wouldn't mind some expert opinions to tell me I'm wrong and they're all girls.
From largest to smallest:
Riffraff, a Birchen Marans, 5 weeks old (boy?)
Columbia, a Light Brahma, 5 weeks. (boy)...
I picked up my first 3 chicks this weekend, straight run. I'm already certain that at least one is a cockerel, quite possibly all three.
So I thought I might add a couple more chicks this coming weekend to compensate. Sex-links this time.
Except...I know I'm supposed to quarantine new...
I picked up a couple of small bags of chick feed for new babies I'm getting this weekend, but accidentally grabbed one medicated. I don't care about the money enough to drive all the way back to return it, but wondered if I could just use it and not buy another.
The question is more, HOW...
Red sex links, black sex links, cinnamon queens, Rhode island reds, Leghorns...
All of these breeds/crosses have reputations for excellent egg production. If I were to choose ONE egg factory hen to keep in my flock (the rest would be pets, not necessarily good producers), which breed is least...
