I have several new hens who just started laying. I know because there has been an uptick in egg production lately. I'm usually at work when the girls are laying, so I can't see which ones. Are there other signs that I can look for to tell which girls are producing besides seeing them on the nest?
I have a chicken that has just started laying. She has laid 3 eggs so far, but all while perched on the roost and sleeping. The eggs hit the coop floor and splatter in the poop below the roost. Any tips on getting her to stop laying eggs during bedtime? Is this something that she will grow...
I placed an order for chicks this spring, so I have more chickens than I need right now. I have a production red pullet for $10. She is beginning to crouch and is 18 weeks old, so should be laying very soon. I will not mail her, but you can pick her up in the Knoxville, TN area.
I call it "Chicken TV." They are entertaining to watch. They have their own little soap opera playing out in my back yard. I love their personalities just as much as I love getting eggs.
I usually use pine chips as litter inside my coop, but the store was out of the big bags of pine. I have heard never to buy cedar due to causing respiratory problems, so I bought Aspen chips. Is Aspen safe to use with chickens?
My Faverolle chick I ordered from the hatchery was supposed to be a pullet but has developed grayish feathers. Could it be a male or just hatchery bird colors?[/IMG]
I got an order of chicks (hatchery surprise special) 3 weeks ago and noticed that one chick was smaller than the others and had strange legs. If I had to describe its posture, I would say similar to an Indian Runner duck. It had to run really fast to stay stable on its legs and stands straight...
I'm interested to see how many East Tennessee chicken keepers we have on here? Would love to network and possibly go in on orders with a group of folks from my area! I'm a big fan of Faverolles, but also have an Australorp, two Easter Eggers, a few Partridge Rocks, and Barred Rocks. What...
I needed to add new layers to my existing flock, so I ordered the pullet surprise special from Ideal in hopes of getting some good layers. I was very pleased. My box contained 5 barred rocks, 1 Easter Egger, 1 Salmon Faverolles, a Maran, and 4 unknowns (all the same breed). Unfortunately the...
I've owned chickens since I was a little girl growing up on a farm, and now I have chickens of my own. They are, of course, farmyard mixes raised by my own hens, incubated "barnyard mutt" eggs, and hatchery chickens. I'm interested in how to get started with Heritage bred chickens and showing...
Hi! I just hatched out two Welsummer (roo) crossed with either a Rhode Island Red or Barred Rock (not sure which hen). The chicks look exactly like Welsummers (wildtype coloration). The chicks have the brown striping, "eyeliner," and the brown triangular marking at the head--just as a...
