My speckled sussex started losing feathers months ago. I separated her from the flock and treated her for possible mites/lice. After her feathers came back and upon integrating her back in with the flock my fears have been reassured. They have picked her clean again within three weeks. I don't...
My speckled sussex started losing feathers starting in the tail end a couple of weeks ago. I am trying to figure out if it is Picking, Mites/Lice, or natural molt. The feathers are getting fuzzy and shrinking down rather than disappearing all together.
I don't think it is mites or lice because...
I woke up this morning to my Silver Laced Wyandotte dead in the coop. She was barely a year old. Up until finding her dead she seemed very healthy, like a normal chicken. She had laid an egg the day before. I just want to make sure that this isn't a sign of anything that could pose a threat to...
My girls are all around 19 weeks old. A few weeks ago I started feeding layer feed to them by mistake. About a week and a half in I realized and switched them to an All-Flock feed. None of them lay yet. My question is, have I affected their long-term health in any way by doing this?
When my girls go in at night they won't use their roost at all. They all bunch up in a corner to sleep. Is this okay? And if not what can I do to get them to roost?
I currently live in a place that doesn't allow very many chickens in its ordinance. My question put as simple as possible I guess would be how can I work to get this ordinance changed?
My Speckled Sussex chick appears to have "pasty" or "plug" butt quite a bit more often than her siblings. I have tried using a wet towel to soften the poo but it stays solid and gains build up, I have also applied Vaseline. Is there anything else that I can do?
I am currently in the process of finishing up my coop. Although I don't feel a heat lamp is necssary for where I live, I want to make my girls comfortable. Winters here can range anywhere from -5° at night to 30-35° during the day. Which isn't too bad compared to other locations. I know that for...
I am using OSB for the walls on my coop. For the floor I have used Hardiebacker board for a support base and used OSB to create replacable floor pans to go over the Hardiebacker that can be pulled in and out for cleaning. The OSB used has been given 3+ coats of paint and primer and all edges...
I am on my fourth week of being a first time chicken owner. From the look of things I don't seem to be doing too bad of a job at it. My coop is almost fully built, and hopefully i've established one that will last at least a few years!
