I have 3 broody (1 silkie and 2 silkie-serama mix) hens sitting on and hatching eggs in 2 nesting boxes. All was going great till just now. My daughter just found a dead newly hatched chick out of the box and 2 of the three hens fighting. The last time we checked the chick was hatching along...

Can a little chick get out of a big egg?

My Silkie hen laid an egg fertilized by a little Serama rooster. The eggshell itself is rather large but the chick inside appears tiny. It is still alive and pipped internally but going on day 25. I'm starting to wonder if it's just too little to brace itself inside such a big egg and peck...

Need serama size for poop board

I have 10 Serama that are 3 weeks old. I want to build a poop board for their coop. I just don't know how long a Serama grows up to be. I have a small coop so I don't want to over do it with the size of the board. Just what I would need to be effective. Any suggestions?

    do my chicks need grit?

Chicks are eating bits of wood chip. They are 1 and 2 days old. Do I need to provide them with grit or will they be okay? I bought some but the bag says use after 2 weeks old. Just a worried overprotective momma.

Using chicken wire - am I signing their death warrant?

This is getting sooooooo expensive. Even using lots of recycled materials my total is already over $150. I can't afford to spend so much money on hardware cloth. I live in the country so there are wild animals like copperheads, raccoons, coyotes and hawks. I would lock them in their coop...

    Incubation safety questions.

I'm a nervous mama. My 14 year old daughter and I are trying our first attempt at hatching. It's part of a girl scout project. We are ready to put the eggs on lock down. I have three concerns about our homemade incubator. 1. Should I have something besides hardware cloth in front of the bulb...

    Deformity? Quitter about day 12

This is our first attempt at incubation. This egg was alive but looked bloody at day 11 candling. Now was dead at day 15 candling. We opened the egg to examine it. Are these abdominal lumps normal? If not, any idea of the cause?
