What is happening to our chicken feed?

We have hanging buckets for our chicken feed. We feed crumble. There are two buckets for our eight chickens. I filled the buckets on Sunday and the food is nearly all gone! There is some on the ground...but it's mashed and kind of broken up like dirt. I'm not sure what is going on. I...

Lost two birds today...due to one of our dogs

It's not her fault (the dog that is) she's a terrier. I knew she'd get them if she had the chance. When we came home from Mother's Day breakfast I let the birds out and started to work on homework. The puppy (he's scared of the birds and fine with them) needed to go out so I asked my daughter...

    Our baby chick is gone!

One of our youngest (an australop) chick is gone. Got home and checked on them and one was missing. There was a small (and I mean small) hole where something could have got a paw in. Then I saw it....feathers pressed against the bottom of the fence where it appears a cat was able to get a paw...

    Three weeks and outside....advice please

We have six chicks. Two are about seven weeks. Two are about five weeks and then two are three weeks. The four older were ready to go out. I didn't want to seperate the younger ones, and have to worry about reintroducing. Also we have one adult EE (beat up in our original flock) that we are...

    Chick starter for adult bird?

We have one adult EE who was continually beat up so bad by our flock that we put her in her own pen. But she was all alone so we got a few chicks to integrate with her. So far that is going great, and we're hoping to have them together this week BUT...I was wondering about the food. We'll...

How do you know when they are too cold?

We had our week and a half babies out in the yard with the older babies. It was partly cloudy...but the sun was out where they were and it was pretty warm. As the day progressed the clouds came in. I went to check on them and they were pecking around and peeping. It was probably around 60...

Doesn't she look like a he?

We call this hen "Roo-hen" cuz she looks like a boy in the face. She's also bigger then all the other hens. She's a girl though. Is this common? What's funny about it is our little banty hen has started crowing. You'd think this one would be the one to start doing that if any hen was going...

    Bald bird....

We have one bird that went bald on her entire butt (the fluffy part) because we had a plucker bird. We had to rehome the plucker because the other bird's bottom was red and bald. In addition the one that had her bottom plucked, also had some ruffled (but not bald) feathers on her back. I...

Our hen crows...is that the same as having a rooster?

The law in our town says no roosters. If we have a hen that crows (turns out it's somewhat common...who knew) would we legally still have to get rid of her? Anyone have any experience with this?

    How do your birds sleep?

I just noticed that our new peeps sleep with their heads tucked under their wings. Our current flock didn't do that when they were babies...or as adults as far as I know. Never seen them do it. Do yours? Just wondering. I know my parrot used to do that but not sure about chickens.

    Names for our new peeps

Hi folks...need some name ideas to throw around for our six new peeps. The youngest are two black australops (about a week old), middle are two EE's (about four weeks), and the oldest are two barred rocks (about six weeks). Any ideas? Kids are anxious to name them but I'm drawing a blank and...

    silver laced wyandotte

I'd really like one. Can anyone speak to their personality? I really am at may max right now...but maybe in the future. They are so beautiful. Besides....they didn't have any at the feed store and I have a feeling that would be something I'd have to order and who takes an order for a few...

    Our hen crows!

I'm not kidding you! This morning our little old english game bantam crowed! She did it several times and woke me up. I then woke my husband up because I needed proof. Sure enough...err,err,errrrrrr. Yes, we KNOW she's a hen because she's the only bantam we have, and she lays bantam...

    Eating rigid foam insulation...styrofoam

We have a piece of foam insulation/styrofoam hidden in the back behind the dog house and I caught the adults (eight months old) eating it. Will they be ok? Is it toxic? Should I remove it?

    Chicks of various ages

We have two new australops a few days old, then we have two EEs about 2 1/2 weeks old, and then we have two barred rocks aproximately 5 weeks old. We want this flock to stay together. Right now the little ones are seperate (but they can see each other) til they grow up a bit. I'm realizing...

I think they're going to start calling me the "Crazy Chicken Lady"

Well, we had five eight month old chickens. Then two weeks ago...oh the little fuzzy butts were calling to us and we ended up with four new ones (two barred rocks and two EE) after visiting the feed store. Then today...back to the feed store for feed/shavings and they had the cutest little...

    Very very thin shells

In our adult flock we have three buff orps and one bantam. They are eight months old and were laying fine until.....we switched from crumble to pellets. The feed store suggested we layer the pellets with scratch which I did. Production dropped dramatically...except for the bantam. She's...

    A little pecker already??

One of our little EE chicks (hmm...must be 2 1/2 weeks now) has started a habit of pecking the other bird's tail feathers., even the older ones about five weeks old. She's not hurting them, or able to pluck it out, but the feathers are frayed and a mess. I'm concerned because we had to rehome...
