Chicken is in her second season. Very pale comb and loosing feathers. Poop very red/brown but we also just painted the coop red so not sure if related. She seems to be pecking around the yard just fine.
We got a "variety" pack of hatching eggs (breed stamped on egg) but this one (black and white)seems to make no sense. Based on other positive IDs it's got to be a Welsummer or Speckled Sussex, but it doesn't look like either of those (to me). Also...it looks a little roo-like.
Pic is of Wellsummer egg who pipped about 8 hours ago. Our Blue Andalusan hatched overnight so I'm not sure what things are supposed to look like, but to me it looks like the membrane is intact and possibly in the wrong position.
We are incubating 7 eggs and the automatic turner is working well for all but the Welsummer. The Welsummer egg is very oblong and of even width, so I'm wondering if there's not enough of a convex surface to work with the turner. Suggestions?
The Welsummer is the dark brown egg on the right.
We are debating whether or not to artificially increase daylight hours as winter approaches. Give how many eggs we have piling up and how long those eggs will last what would be the long term effects of letting the hens do their "normal" thing through the winter months?
