    Ventilation question

Hey guys! I have my coop in 1/3 of my screened porch, that I mostly stay in. It's starting the time to plastic of my screens, so I'm wondering what would be better. In preface, the coop is 8x12', with the screened in area of,(at the moment), of 4x28, so they have plenty of ventilation now...

    I'm confused

Due to all the rain this week, I've had the opportunity to watch my hens lately. I have a few 'green' egg layers, but the only one I've seen laying is my starlight green egger. Well, today, she went to the box and laid. Right after my, I thought one of my red sex links laid also. When I...

    Very hard egg shells

Hey all!! I have about 3 hens laying for about a week now, and the shells are really hard to crack open. Is this normal, and once the eggs get normal size will they soften up a bit? We don't have roosters so I'm not worried about hatching them. Thanks in advance!

    Dominique getting vocal

Hey guys. It's been an exciting day so far, with our first 2 eggs this morning! Since the eggs, our 20 week dominique is getting pretty vocal and jumping in and out of the next boxes. Does this mean that she is getting ready too? Am I just getting anxious?

    Finally, we have an egg!!

I'm not sure if it's from the production red or the sex link, because they have both been vocal. Nevertheless, it's really exciting!!

I was wondering if anybody had ever used old windows for poop boards? I hate mine, but have some windows laying around.

    Panting chickens

Ok, to start off, I've read plenty of posts on here about what to do, ie electrolytes, ice blocks and cubes, shade, etc. My problem, for whatever reason is that the chicks have a part of my screened in porch as their coop, with access to a partially shaded run to go in. The screened porch...

    Nest box idea?

Hey guys! I was thinking about using this for a nest box. Will it work for them? Why or why not? I'm thinking about trying to cover it with something, but not quite sure of what yet. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

    Sex?

I have a beautiful chicken, but it's Comb is larger than the rest of the other's at the same age, so I'm hoping it's not a Cockrell. I believe it's an Easter egger, but not sure on that either. I did buy 5 colored egg layers, and it was one of them. Any help would be appreciated!

    Integration going well, so far

A couple of days ago, I decided to let my brooder chicks out in the actual coop with the older ones. Supervised of course. So far, everything is going pretty good, except for a few pecks and chasing. The smaller chicks are 7 and 5 weeks old, and the older chicks are 11 weeks today. It's...

    Flock raiser vs layer feed

Hey guys! I'm starting to think about switching food in another month, so I have a question about what to introduce to my flock. To preface, I have 10, 10 week olds, 6, 7 week olds, and 6, 4 week olds. I know it's a matter of opinion, but what do you feed, and why?

    Nesting box question

Hey guys! With the price of lumber these day, I am thinking about going with clear, Rubbermaid containers for my nesting boxes. I have some on hand, so it will definitely save me some money, I hope. I understand that they like their 'privacy' while laying, so I'm not sure how to darken them up...

    My beginner thoughts

Ok, so I made my 8x12 chicken coop on my porch, and here's my thoughts on it, so far. #1. I have found out that we aren't allowed chickens where we live for some reason. Although, we can have pets of any kind, as long as they stay in the 'house '. Problem solved. #2. Predator proof! We have...

    Ages for vegies and...

Hey guys! My oldest chicks are now 8 weeks old tomorrow, and I'm wondering if I can start feeding them veggies and such? I did buy grit for them today, so that's covered. Also, what fruits or veggies can't I feed them? BTW, they are all laying pellets, to be, if that's a difference. Thanks.

    Dang the food

I've never understood how much these things eat! That saying , 'eat like a bird, is way off. My 10, 6 week olds are eating 4 cups a day? Wow!

    Coop on my porch?

Hey all! When we first got our chicks, ordered a 15x8 shed for a coop for them. Well, for whatever reason, it still hasn't come yet, after about 5-6 weeks. We are starting to wonder if will even show up. Ok, we have a 12x24' screened porch that I was thinking about turning and 8x12' space...
