Over the course of four days, I lost 10 brand new one week old babies to Coccidia. They were hatched and being raised by a broody hen in a coop that is only used for broody hens and their babies. I started Corid, but the babies were just too young, so it was ineffective against the outbreak...
This baby is hatching under a broody. It's made a complete mess out of it's egg though. I made the hole at the top so that I knew it could breathe. I made sure to make the hole in the air cell. Anyway, is this okay for the chick to be pecking away at the shell like this? It's still...
I have a rooster-only flock that are kept completely separate from the other birds. Is it possible to add another rooster (or roosters) to that pen?
I've successfully added hens/pullets to the layers pen by putting the new girl in a dog kennel inside the coop or run for a few days. Would I...
I currently have two broody hens that are setting on a total of 12 eggs between them. They are set to hatch this upcoming Saturday.
The last time I had a broody, I moved her and her broody sister to a separate coop and, when I did, the broody sister immediately broke and refused to return to...
I've got two Buff Brahma's that I'm trying to determine the sex of. They are 13 weeks old. Please comment what sex you think they are and why you think that. This helps me (and others) learn what to look for when sexing this breed of chicken.
The pictures of the first chicken are named "1a"...
Does anyone have experience in sexing Silver Laced Orpingtons? I have some that are about 13 weeks old, I think, but I still can't tell if they are male or female. My Buffs I could tell really early on, but these are a tough call. Any tips?
I am looking for a heritage Buff Orpington breeder that sells hatching eggs or day olds, but I would prefer hatching eggs because we really enjoy hatching them. Know of someone? Please let me know & please include pictures of parent flock and prices.
This is my first time hatching under a broody. My broody Buff Orpington has another week to go before hatch day. She's in a "maternity ward" pen by herself. The floor of her nesting box is about 6-8 inches off the floor of the coop. Should I leave her be where she's at? The nesting box has...
Eggs didn't hatch out to be what they were supposed to be. What did I end up with?

#3- This one isn't completely fluffed up yet, but maybe you can get a good enough idea. It's a lot different than the other 2 (gray feet and much more silver down), but came from the same eggs.
I had a chick hatch today with the yolk unabsorbed. It hatched on it's own. I haven't opened the incubator at all since lockdown began on Wednesday. The unabsorbed portion is about the size of a cherry and the yolk is still attached to the shell by a thread. Do I need to do anything?
I've got 6 eggs in the incubator on Day 18. 3 are Buff Orpingtons and 3 are Easter Eggers. The Buffs have fantastic air cells that have grown perfectly since day 14 when I last marked the cells. The Easter Eggers air cells have barely grown at all. They are supposed to go into lockdown...
I set 20 eggs on the morning of March 30. Only 6 are showing veins and in the past couple of days have started moving around in the shells. The others aren't showing anything. We are on Day 10 or 11 (depending on how you figure it). How can I be certain they are not fertile and aren't just slow...
I've been trying to decide if my little chick is a boy or a girl. I put it with a hen today and the chick did the aggression dance and he tried to flog her. Mind you, the chick is half the size of the hen. Fortunately, she just ignored the chick. So is it safe to say now that it's a boy or...
I have Buff Orpingtons, but only ladies so I don't know how the roosters usually behave. I absolutely adore the Orpingtons and am considering adding some Silver Laced Orpingtons to the flock and replacing an aggressive Rhode Island Red Roo with a Silver Laced Orpington Roo. I have small...
I know what the right thing to do is, but I just need confirmation that it is indeed the right thing.
I have a little 4 1/2 week old chick that has a severe cross beak. Her lower jaw is in bad, bad shape. I've tried giving yogurt, chick crumble, wet crumble, and she can eat none of it. I...
Eggs went into the incubator at 2AM Tuesday morning. The temperature went pretty crazy yesterday, but I was able to stay on top of the incubator and make adjustments up and down to keep the temperature in a good range until the eggs heated to a good temperature. I've got a bulb thermometer...
I'm sure the one in the back is a male. He's getting his green head feathers in and has a very nice white collar. What about the other one though? Just today I noticed a white dot on the front of the neck in about the same place that the male has his collar. They are the same age, or roughly...
