I called up the only local and licensed poultry processing company to make a Turkey appointment. Upon talking to the gentleman, he told me they stun (electrocute) the birds but they are still alive and then slit the throat. He said it's the most humane because they don't feel it but it sounds...
I have a converted 6x10 dog kennel into a coop (just coop, not run)
How many medium- small(silkie mix) and 1 Turkey tom will fit?
I currently have 20 chickens (9 are chicks/smaller breeds so far)
1 Turkey tom
3 ducks
The ducks are housed separately at nightfor now but idk how well I'll be...
She wasn't feeling well last night so I separated her from the others
And she passed in the middle of the night. She's my first adult to pass from anything but an animal attack
She had a large squishy crop, clear/brownish fishy smelling fluid was coming out. She had vomited a lot of brown-poop...
I have 5 chicks left from 14 that I think have been battling coccidiosis. One I know is for sure
They are extremely stunted but now they are starting to take on the appearance of a cornish x. (I'll post pictures soon) the naked underside, sagging belly, lazy, eating more(ish)
They are roughly...
I bought what I thought was cornish x from a local farmer that gets bulk orders monthly. The hatch date was 7/13, I bought them 7/18. I've had 3 die so far and they are so small!! I'm free feeding 18% start. They don't eat like cornish x, much like normal chicks. I bet they go through less than...
I have 2 older hens that started sneezing recently and sound like they're growling sometimes. Like the back of their throat is grinding rocks
Other than that, they're fine happy and healthy
I'm not too concerned but I have them with the flock and don't want something more serious to wipe them...
These free loaders were hatched out feburary 7th and still nada
We have a history of egg eaters in my flock. None have had any insidents lately but I'm worried with a soft egg, they might again...
I'm obsessed with dried mealworms!
My old hen is a great layer but her egg shells were starting to be thin. After trying oyster shell, dried egg shells, and layer pellets I thought she was just boomed to have flimsy shells
Until I tried mealworms
I thought they were just for treats. Boy was I...
I have 2 roosters. One is a purebred EE from local breeder. He is so beautiful but I'm not sure he's the sibling to 2 EE hens. The breeder has 2 roo and 6hens so the odds are there
The only con is he does seem to be the 'top' rooster. He does fight but not very aggressively yet. The 2 older hens...
Pictures to come
But I had a duckling hatch with one wing, the other one is non existent
I'm guessing it's from inbreeding unfortunately as I had another fully formed duckling die in egg because of a deformed beak...(not my eggs)
I can't find any images on one winged ducks! I know it will likely...
Why would a duck hen break open her own egg? I just found a almost formed egg, they're due in 10 days
She has her own house that is predator proof and she was covered in blood so I know it was her.
The duckling was broken out of the nest, yoke still intact
My DH bought a kill cone but it's way too small
We've processed a few birds but it just doesn't work the way we need it too
It's a medium and I think we should have gotten a XL, so we've been debating on cutting the end off to create a larger opening
Has anyone done this? Will it work better...
I need some opinions on what to do
I have 2 broody muscovy hens that are on the same nest (everyone lays in the nest unfortunately), I just put 16 fertile eggs under them that have been developing since Wednesday.
I also have 2 top hens, they've been picking on one particular duck hen and her...
I have a cornish cross that might be sick. They're 5 weeks old so not ready to process yet
It looks more purple than pink, labored breathing and lethargic
Should I just call or process?
I have my cornish x chicks out with the other hen in a separate pen
They're about 4.5 weeks old but they're not that big in my opinion. When would you let them free range with the others? They're really lazy and I'm worried they'll get picked on because they're different. They have been outside...
