    Share Raising Chickens hacks

What was something you found out that was life changing when raising chickens? Something that made your life easier or the chickens.

    Hen is suddenly gaping.

My hen started gaping after snack time. Is that common. She's active, eating, drinking and showing no other signs.

    Polish Rooster w/ a giant afro - 13 Weeks

My Roo has been a bit of a handful. His giant crest does not help. Will his hair life from his eyes as he gets older or will he continue being partially blind the rest of his life (unless I trim it)? I do NOT like trimming it. It's heavy by his eyes and difficult to get to even when he's...

My little chick is older now. Could you tell me if it's a rooster?

When he was smaller everyone was sure he was a she. Thoughts now? I believe he is 13 weeks old. (Please forgive his haircut. It was my first time and I did a terrible job so that I could help him see.)

    Mixed batch

Q#1: I have a mixed batch of birds (5) as I find out their breeds and study them I find most aren't broody. Does that mean likely there will be no chicks? Q#2: I have a really oblivious Polish mix roo. Is he going to be able to fertilize eggs when he matures?

Newbies buying up all the chickens

On FB they are accusing new chick owners of buying up all the chicks. That is literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard. New chick owners don't buy 300 chicks. We get maybe half a dozen to a dozen. Either way... It's either commercial places buying them up or people that know chickens so...

Has anyone had their first week free ranging their chickens go terribly wrong?

I'm getting ready to do some short term free ranging in the late afternoon where I can supervise because my place is crawling in predators and I'm in the woods. Could anyone that had Free Ranging go terribly wrong tell me their stories. Did your Chickens take off, fly off, not assemble back to...

Curious which breed of Chick this is...

Curious which breed of Chick this is... I like her. She's super inquisitive in comparison to the others and oddly playful, fast and stealthy. She's 12/13 weeks old. She just got her adult voice yesterday and would not shut up LOL (she apparently does not like my mothers voice). She...

Asking Breed for my 5 birds - 11/12 Weeks old - Gender for Gabriel

Asking Gender and Breed for my 5 birds. The first one is the head chick - Willow (was daisy) The second is her side kick Mia - They look close in breed but one has really fluffy cheeks. The 3rd is Raven - I think he may be a White faced black Spanish?? The 4th is Cait - Also very fluffy...

I have an 11 week old chick with scabs on her tail feathers.

I don't see her being picked on but on the root of her tail feathers she has scabs on both sides. Do I worry? I thought chicks would be slightly easier than Guineas but it's literally just different worries. Forgive me for my 200 posts. 😔

Is this normal or a distress call?

He/she is making this noise. Is it a distress call? All my 11 week chicks seem to be maturing and making hen sounds. My silkie has had a tough time. He/she is way smaller, I found him beak down in the run with his wing hanging out. I brought him on the house for 3 days in a secluded area. One...

    Silkie Loner chick 10 weeks

I have 1 silkie and 4 regular chicks all the same age. My silkie is incredibly slow moving around almost like he/she is depressed. He never eats any scratch or treats. He never goes into the coop when it gets dark and I have to manually close the door so he doesn't get crushed by it (he lays...

Experts Needed for two 10/11 week Chicks Gender and Possibly Breed

I'm only schooled on Guinea hens. This year I tried something different and I recently got 6 very different chicks (hens and maybe a rooster)...the runt didn't make it. I have a dilemma - I was under the impression that what I believe is a Silkie was a Roo. He's had red wattles and a comb...

    Gender question

I was sure my baby chick was a roo. I have alot of people questioning that. I'm new to Silkies. He is 10 weeks old and kind of a loner because his fluff causes him to be blind (working on fixing that). I tried to get some decent photos even though the fluff covers his wattle and comb. Thoughts 🤔

    Guinea eggs scattered

My hen has laid about 9 eggs. 2 are buried under straw the rest scattered all over the coop, how will she lay on them if they are all over the place? Also would like to add whenever I take an egg out or try to find one the male goes back wild on me and everyone in the coop and run.
