Another thread on Incubator temperature and pullet/cockerel ratio- And Pre-incubation for Storage

OK, before I get the common answer that "sex is determined in the egg", let me state that I know this, what I am interested in is whether one sex can survive a particular temp better than the other, resulting in for instance more "dead in shell" male eggs. I first read this from a source that...

    What Cross is this ?

This is a pic of our unique hen Wishbone. I hatched her from a local lady's barnyard mix...I'm not sure she even knows what breeds she has, lots of chickens coming and going. I wonder if anyone has an idea? She's definitely smaller than most, I'd say little more than half to 2/3 the size of...

A Commercial Feed that Chickens actually Like?

I'm just wanting to hear folks' experience with different feeds and wondering if anyone has done "taste tests" to determine which food their flock prefers ? I know much of my problem is I'm a softy and I give them treats. But the actual chicken feed (I've tried a few different brands)...layer...

This fan is decent for making a circulating incubator

Just thought I'd post this link as it was my 3rd attempt and it fit the bill nicely and gave good hatch rates. This little 60mm fan puts out the perfect airflow for something like a smallish incubator. Not hurricane force like the not so good bators have...and not mosquito farts like some fans...

Short incubation before storage Increases Hatch Rates.

Very interesting article - researches showed better hatchability and better chicks when eggs were pre-incubated for short periods before storage. If I get to the point where I mail any fertile eggs, or even decide to store my own for any period I will certainly do this. Makes sense...

    Infertile rooster?

Hey all, couple questions. I have a real pretty Isbar rooster who is a little over 8 mos old. He's been at it with my slightly larger breed hens since he was about 4 1/2 mos old. I have seen some intermittent eggs that I think had a bullseye, but after 3 attempts at incubating about 6 eggs at...

Looking for DIY automatic chicken-door design.

OK , we clone genes (I used to at least)...we put a man on the moon (or not)... but I haven't found an automatic treadle style chicken door design in my web searches... something based on the weight of the chicken, like that fantastic treadle-feeder plan I found on byc (sorry, don't have the...

Site Suggestion: "View all pics in Thread"

OK Please let me know if I missed it, but it seems BYC forums have no option to view all the pics in a thread, in gallery format. I was a frequent visitor of the RC forums (radio control planes) in the past and this is one option they always had which kept me on their site much longer. I can't...

Young Beta rooster is now alpha, what's your experience?

Hey all, I just wanted to run this by you guys, I've hatched some eggs in hopes of adding a Roo to my Hen flock of mostly Faverolles (pure friendly sweeties, and timid) and a couple Reds (anti-social and quite dangerous to the young ones). First off what's my goal ? Doing some breeding...
