    Beginner Breeder - Help!

I’m trying to get a rough breeding program outline down on paper for up to 10 breeding groups. I’d love to hear your feedback! ((note: this is a hobby, but one I’d like to take further in the future.) 1. What is the smallest number of hens you’d put into the breeding pen with a rooster? 2...

    Housing breeding pairs?

Say you have 5 roos & 9 hens. After they’re done with the breeding season (let out of their breeding pens), would you separate roos from hens or keep together? If you’d separate, does there need to be a wall to keep the roos from seeing the hens? I have a 40x20 outdoor space to work with...

    American Bresse?

Hey guys. So I recently got some American Bresse from a quality breeder (not a hatchery). My plan was originally to raise & butcher. But it got me thinking… Are they nearly as “desirable” as the French Bresse? Is there any money in selling hatching eggs or chicks compared to standard breeds in...

    Pricing?

I bought 30 cockerels, all dual purpose but all good meat breeds. Many family and friends are requesting to buy a couple. I know there are laws, so I’m selling live and offering free processing before delivery. I need help figuring out pricing. If I just broke even, I’d be happy. We will be...

    Breed Mixes?

What are your favorite mix breeds/hybrids? I have 20+ different breeds of chicks, and trying to plan out which pullets to keep, which cockerels to keep, and who to sell. But purebred pens won’t be in the cards until atleast late 2021. So I’ll be dividing them into 3 groups as the following: roo...

    Breeding trios?

So I’m building quite the client base already! So far I’ve only been hatching eggs bought from others, and selling the chicks. However, we are planning on keeping trios of the following breeds for next years hatches. I see so many people selling barnyard mixes and making good money on them.. my...

    Separating breeds?!

This is for those of you that have multiple breeding pairs of different breeds. I understand the coop layout - divided for each breed. But do they always stay that way? Do you combine them for winter/off months? If you combine them and a rooster breeds a hen, how long after being seperated with...

    Hurt leg/wing??

I have my first chicken injury - 7 weeks old. I’ve examined her multiple times and can’t see anything that looks wrong. However, she’s super tipsy, I’m thinking it’s a leg injury, on her right side. She can stumble just enough to eat and drink, but spends the whole rest of the day laying flat on...

    Cuddly Breeds?

My 4 year old is looking for a couple pets! He wants the “climb on your lap and cuddle” type. I’m not too worried about poor production - Just want to make the little boy happy. What do you suggest? I was thinking maybe Millie Fleur D’Uccles?

    Switching Incubators - bad idea?

I have 2 Farm Innovators Still Air incubators WITH fans installed. Eggs came sooner than expected, so it’s what I had to deal with. One is okay, the other spikes up to 107 and down to 94. Humidity stays decent, as long as I keep on it. I have sponges in there. I’ve decided to just build my own...

    Helping feathers grow back?

I just bought my first five layers & a rooster. They came from a cramped shed, so they all have pecked spots missing feathers on their backs. How do I help them grow this back? Thanks!

    Icelandic

I read up on Icelandic chickens. What I could find, atleast. And by the sounds of it, they’re very rare is the US. Are they not as rare/desired as I’ve read..? I have a 6 week old pullet/cockerel pair, posted for only $6 each. On multiple sites. No takers or even inquiries. I’ve considered just...

    Devastated 4 year old

My 4 year old, with his own money earned doing chores at our dairy farm, purchased his first hatching eggs. (I originally accidentally bought them while half asleep. He overheard me saying I was calling to cancel, but he wanted to “buy” them from me.) $114 for eggs, $200 for incubators. After...

    Incubator opinions?

I’m looking for a new incubator or 2 - hatching anywhere from 12 to 100 eggs at a time. Has anyone here used this? Opinions? What’s your favorite? I prefer an auto turner.

    Chicken “beds”?

I’m putting up a “chick nursery”. Basically, a shed with 1 brooder box for tiny chicks, 1 for older chicks, and then the rest will have free run of the coop until around 16-18 weeks. Apart from the their roosting spots, should I add “beds”, similar to nesting boxes?

    Too much space?

Will chickens do poorly is a coop that’s TOO big? I’m only “planning” on keeping 10-15 chickens.. however, chicken math. 😂 There will be 2 brooder pens as well (stage 1 and stage 2). We were thinking of making it atleast 12’ wide x 8’ long.
