    Terrible start

Hey guys, I need some advice or wisdom. This will be my second year with chickens. I have three, I have an older Easter Egger probably 6 years old, I have a little white and black one I'm assuming an Americana 3 to 4 years old, and a black sex link that just turned 2. I'm in Ontario and the...

    Dream come true.

So a little over a year ago, we had to put my little dog down after 15 years. I was absolutely devastated. I wasn't ready for another dog but I still wanted an animal. Friend of mine suggested that I get chickens, I wasn't really sure about the whole idea but I agreed to it. In my usual...

    Egg shell issue.

Hi guys, I have seen several posts about similar issues but I haven't been able to find an exact answer. I am trying to figure out why I have one chicken that is laying daily, but each and every egg has a weak spot in the exact same spot. Other than she is an older chicken she doesn't appear to...

    Yolk spot?

Hi guys, I need wisdom once again.... I have a healthy year and a half old sex link. She started back laying in march and all was well, however, the last month every egg she lays has the tiniest spot on the yolk. It almost looks like a meat spot, there is no runny blood and she appears to be...

Coop gems -what is the one feature of your coop you couldnt live without?

I'm hoping this thread will be a fun break for everyone with some knowledge and experience thrown in. My question is: What is one thing you have ( or have modified) in the chicken coop or run that you couldnt live without now?

Wash or no? Need a tie breaker.

Here in Ontario it is now the muddy season. Regardless of how much straw or covering I give my girls I get the occasional egg that is covered in mud. I have read several articles that say do not wash or rinse the eggs that it removes the natural barrier and the eggs can then get bacteria and...

To bug, or not to bug?

I have searched and searched and connot find a definite answer. My girls get mostly free roam. They will eat anything that wiggles, crawls, or is otherwise nasty. My question is- are there any bugs that can poison my chickens? Are they smart enough to know not to eat them?

Cranky young hen or serious problem?

I have 3 girls that I got last fall. 2 from a friend that were older (4-6 years?) And a pullet I bought. After thier initial pecking order war they have been fine ever since. My two oldest started laying again about 2 weeks ago. My pullet, now grown, has started being *pushy* the last 3 or...

Could someone identify this Older lady

Meet Nugget. She is a larger bird, we figure about 5 to 6 years old. She is very quiet and unless spooked is very docile. She lays large white eggs more often than not with double yolks. She is wonderful and was given to me by a friend but I really have no idea what she may be. EE? Any ideas...
