Mediocre hatch and weak late chick

Hi all, I just had my first bad hatch. Only 6 of 17 eggs hatched and they were all late. I believe it’s related to the deep cleaning I had to do after an acquaintance borrowed my incubator and gave it back absolutely filthy. I think the humidity measurement is off. Anyway, they were a bunch of...

    Rabbit cage as brooder

Can I use this rabbit cage as a brooder? It’s 2x3 and I’m less concerned about space as I am the risk of them jumping up and getting their heads stuck through the bars. Is there a maximum spacing it should be for safety? Or should I line it with chick fencing?

Cleaning a filthy Nuture Right 360 - help please!

I (stupidly) loaned my brand new incubator to an acquaintance. I did get it back, but it is absolutely filthy. I was able to get the poop, dirty water residue, and food (wtf?) out of the base, but the very top around the orange tubes and the fan is covered in really fine hair(????). Like someone...

    Questions about winter ventilation

Hi! This is my first winter with my flock of 7 chickens and I’m not sure how to utilize my coop properly. It is taller than it is wide (they only sleep in it), and it has great ventilation for summer with a big drop down opening on the people door and a wide, short opening on the opposite side...

    Weird Easter Egger situation

I have a really strange situation with my 2 EE, at least to me, being a newbie. One of my EE started laying green eggs. Cool. Then one day a giant and I mean GIANT blue egg appeared in the nesting box. The largest egg I have ever seen. I assumed it was from EE #2 and thanked my lucky stars she...

When do guineas start acting like guineas? Haha

Hi all, it’s my newbie question of the week! I have 10 8-week old guineas that I have been allowing to more or less free range for the past 2 weeks, increasing their time out to all day for the past week. I keep an eye on them since they’re still young and lock them up at dusk. Thankfully they...

    Young guineas fighting and bloody!

I just discovered 2 of my young guineas (7.5 weeks) fighting and bloody. They were pecking at each other and both of their faces are messed up. What should I do?? Their shed is 49sq ft for 10 of them, all raised together. I’ve had no problems so far. They’ve been outside all day so I can’t see...

When can guineas free range unsupervised?

I’ve been letting my 6 week old guineas out for a few hours a day for the past week. They oddly prefer to be close to the shed I’ve had them in and go in and out all day. I have to encourage them to come to our yard. Anyway, I’ve been out keeping a close eye on them because we have hawks and...

    Injured keet (?)

One of my 6-week old keets has some dried blood below their eye and more around what appears to be a hole in their head. It is acting normally, but yikes! Has it been pecked by one of the others? Is there anything I should do for it?

Please evaluate my chicken tractor re: predator proofing

I recently purchased this chicken tractor and really like it so far. Do I need to do anything to improve it to keep predators out? We have coyotes, skunks, and raccoons for sure. The wire is 1/2” hardware cloth. The run on the bottom and access door on the coop top each have one 2-step latch...

48 degrees overnight too cold for 5 weeks?

I have 10 5-week old keets that have been living in a brooder in my insulated tack room in my barn. I moved them into a big, heavy duty plastic shed today that I hope will eventually be the place they return to for roosting at night. It is vented and they have a 16x24 heat plate. It’s going into...

    Best feeder for messy keets?

Hi all, my keets are about 3 weeks old now and they’re going to put me in the poor house for the amount of food that they waste! I have one of the tall, round feeders that can be hung, but I’ve had it on the floor. 10 of them have been emptying it in a matter of hours. They kick it the food all...

Younger chick pushed out from under heat plate

Hi all, the hatchery accidentally gave me a wrong chick last week and offered me a new one today. I have been raising 10 keets with my 6 chicks, but I’m moving the keets to their own brooder tomorrow since they’re huge and trample everything and everyone every time they panic (every 5 minutes it...

Can keets be raised in a barn?

Hi all! This is my first post. The title says it all, can my keets be raised in a barn with a premier heating plate? I was planning to raise them with my chicks, but (surprise!) they all positively freak out when I stick my hand in there and it’s making my chicks freak out, haha. Wild little...
