One of my 7 month old hens has a dirty butt. All other 5 hens look good and are acting well. They are in a large run, and I clean their poop board daily and the poop all looks normal. No signs of worms or parasites. Any advice?
So, I've read and re-read hundreds (probably for real) of posts on raising my new babies with a mama heating pad instead of a heat lamp. I bravely ordered my Sunbeam Xpress Heat king sized heating pad, and it barely feels warm on the highest setting; less warm than my other heating pads that I...
I'm not sure this belongs here because my chickens are acting well and are otherwise well appearing, but for anyone know why my girls have frazzled looking feathers on their chests, specifically in front of their crops. I don't want to miss signs of a problem. I don't see any signs of parasites...
We are in the process of upgrading for my girls. We currently have 2 hens, but are planning 4 more in early April. I don't plan to add any more for at least a couple of years and really should keep my flock under 10.
I'd love some advice from the experts about the best layout for the inside of...
Hi everyone! I joined the world of backyard chickens last March, and have learned so much. We are planning to build a new, secure coop and run over the next couple of months before I begin to introduce some new babies to grow my little flock. Since we're starting from scratch, I am hoping to use...
I currently have three 4 month old hens and found myself in a situation where 1 of my 2 month olds is suddenly alone. (I had 2 roosters from each group that are now rehomed, and my other 2 month old chick is missing- possible predator or possible that it was scared and got out when mowing the...
This is my 8 week old Cuckoo Maran; sold as a pullet. She's much larger than my Barred Rock and Buff Orpington that were purchased at the same time, and her comb/wattles are more developed, but her feathers seem rounded. Her coloring is similar to my Barred Rock; possibly a little more white...
My dog found this fella in our yard today; rat snake about 4 feet long. He climbed a tree to get away and, when he came down, made his escape through the chicken pen. I have 3 hens and a (likely) rooster who are about 10-11 weeks old. I put them up in the coop at night where all large openings...
Advice Wanted: I am genuinely looking for advice on how to find a good home for a roo. I understand and have no problem with people raising and eating their own food, but I didn't get my flock for that and have gotten fond of them. I have a Lavender Orpington that appears to be a he instead of a...
Hi everyone! Just taking a moment to introduce myself! I'm from Georgia, USA and have been interested in raising chickens for quite a while, both for the entertainment and the eggs. I finally decided to give it a go and got 4 chicks on my birthday at the beginning of March; 2 pullets- a Black...
I am new to raising chickens and have 4 different breeds. I got them all at the same time, so they are similar in age and about 6 weeks old. 2 were straight run and 2 pullets. I am hoping for all hens, but suspicious that my Lavender Orpington is a male. Would love the opinion of some...
