Pullet or Roo - RIR or Red Sussex Cross - bird #2

5 weeks + 3 days old. Rhode Island Red (or possibly Red Sussex Cross as seller had both types). This is Nessie. Nessie has slightly less variation in her feather colours overall than Ramona (posted separately). But Nessie has a bit of much lighter colouring at the tip of her wings. I think both...

Pulled or Roo - Rhode Island Red or Red Sussex Cross

5 week + 3 days old Rhode Island Red (or possibly a Red Sussex Cross - I don’t know how to tell the difference) This is “Ramona Quimby”

    Breed and gender - BSL

2 black chicks are 5 weeks + 2 days. Named Tiger and Zebra. Thought we were getting Plymouth Barred Rocks, but they clearly are not. Breeder was also selling “Red Rock Cross” so I assume that’s what they are. I understand that to be Black Sex Linked (aka Black Star). If I am correct that means...

Pulled or Roo - Columbian Rock

Chick is 5 weeks + 2 days. “Her” name is Bea. No great side angle photo but hopefully there images are helpful. I realize the one photo is clearly of another bird but it shows Bea’s behind so I included it. Thanks for your insights!

Sex of RIR, BSL, and Columbian Rock....Plymouth Barred Rock turns out to be a Black Sex Linked!

Chicks are 2 weeks + 5 days old. Thought we had: 1 x Columbian Rock Cross 2 x Rhode Island Red (possibly Red Sussex Cross) 2 x Plymouth Barred Rock Now I realize that there are no stripes and no head spots so it is likely the other option from the mix sold which was “Red Rock Cross” - I...

Wire for coop / wire for run

I’ve built our first coop, and used 1/4” hardware cloth. The only predators we need to worry about around here are raccoons and rats. I’m wondering if I should have gone with 1/2” cloth because it’s a thicker gauge...I’ve read that raccoons can tear through the thinner 1/4” stuff. Anyone have...

Building a new coop this week and planning to get 5 chicks for eggs. Very little experience with chickens. Avid gardeners. Family includes a 4 year old so we’re on the search for friendly chickens. Photo shows coop not quite finished, still planning to add additional run space as well.
