I dont think this was my rooster, whose poops are usually pretty textbook blobs with foam, not spread out like this. I have a couple of hens who may be elderly, have seen a couple of unshelled eggs in the last week, there are some ruffled feathers but otherwise everything is normal. Thoughts?
This is Magenta, my favorite hen. She came to us as an adult (no idea how old) with a case of bumblefoot, which was cured.
She now seems a bit cranky (she has always been a bit of a spitfire) and has these weird feathers, but otherwise seems fine. Poops are a little watery but otherwise not...
So, we were trying to increase our roo/hen ratio, and I kept underestimating our success and potential for bad luck...we had a huge hatch rate (15 out of 17) and a just bizarrely high number of roosters (only one hen is confirmed...we have only one bird we're not sure of... so 12 confirmed...
Thought I'd make a thread where the question can be asked repeatedly since I was about to ask and saw a couple of other threads in the same vein.
Our first hatch has these interesting smoky-colored chicks. We have a mixed flock and these were all sired by our Italian, but the hens are Pharoh...
😢 So, decided to try moving the chicks out of the brooder and was toying with the idea of sexing them when I noticed one of my pretty tibetan babies had a poop stuck to its behind. I tried giving it a short wash with warm water and then put it in the dust bath to see if it would fix...
So, my 11-day-old chicks that are in the living room staged a massive jailbreak this morning and flew out of the extra-tall tote I'm keeping them in for the time being.
Only one, the one who found himself inside another tote, didn't like the idea - and yelled loud enough for me to go get him...
So, we have five layers right now (two are young and still laying the teeny eggs, but I'm sure that isn't for long.) If I want to hatch eggs, do I collect each one and put it right in the incubator, or can I leave them at room temperature (if so, for how long?) until I have enough to hatch...
I've been searching here and in general - so, we bought some adults and some quail chicks from a local breeder, who's a good guy and was kind enough to swap the rooster I accidentally bought for the hen I intended to get.
Everybody is settling in and mostly doing fine - I just moved most of the...
So, we've been toying with the idea of raising quail for years - but we live in a teeny-tiny town house. If we have quails, we'd have to cohabitate (we might be able to do an outdoor pen someday, but that would involve significant change and redistribution of stuff.)
So, we need something...
Hi, my name is Michele, Mhays is usually my forum name. I've been fascinated by quail for years, ever since discovering quail eggs in our local Chinatown. We live in a teeny-tiny attached townhouse right near the border of Chicago - about as urban as you can get in the suburbs. Obviously, we...
