I'm back!. Last of our White Leghorns and ISO Browns are gone and the Mrs decided on getting a new flock. Mix of Jersey Giant, Cinnamon Queen, and some other type (I say she got silver laced Wyandotte, but I'm being told I'm wrong) totally 9 chicks. Trying out a brooder heat panel instead of...
Thinking about buying my layer feed from my local Farm Bureau and stop buying from TSC to support local but I wanting some input to if this is a good layer mix.

Come November I will stop growing veggies in one of our raised garden beds until April and I was wondering if I could top the bed directly with chicken manure safely; I will cover it with black plastic. If yes, should I wet the soil before I put the black plastic over the garden?
I do DLM...
When will the hens begin laying regularly? Is it still the down time due to day light for them to be laying? Or has my flock of 11 hens hit their wall?
White leghorns and ISA Brown hens, born May 16, 2000. Went through their first molt last year/this year. Egg production declined of...
We have an egg eater in our flock. We're doing hourly egg checks removing the eggs from the nesting boxes and coop in the morning hours and it's working pretty good. What we are noticing is that the white eggs are not being bothered but the brown eggs are. I have white golf balls in there and...
11 Pullets (purchased back in April as chicks) started laying in October of this year and have been steady laying 8 to 11 eggs per day. Fast forward to this week. We have seen 6, 7, 3, and 4 eggs this week. My wife and I were talking and we changed to layer feed 2.5 months ago, still provide...
About to drop to a chilly 24 degrees with 10 to 20 mph winds tonight and tomorrow in my part of South Carolina, so putting in a shutter that I found to cover the 2'x3' ventilation window to reduce how much cold air might blow in. Going to have the slats facing upward so rising heat, ammonia...
So the kids made Deviled Eggs for Turkey Day and showed me something odd. About a 1/4" of the tip of the egg whites were missing after being boiled. They didn't mess anything up or peel the eggs badly, the tip of the egg was missing on several eggs, like there was air in there were the egg...
I have researched this to where I am almost sick of reading varying thoughts on the matter, trying to figure out if it would work in mine.
1. I have composted before, just not with chickens/poop. Stopped because it was getting to be too time consuming turning, flipping, and flopping stuff...
Is there a problem if I add chicken poop to the soil of the raised bed? Should I turn the soil with the chicken poop or let it sit on top to dry?
We we do a little raised bed gardening in troughs and don't grow in the fall/winter months and begin gardening March/April. We scrap poop boards...
SOOOO to all you South Carolina egg people that might want to sell your eggs at a Farmers Market, you need to apply for an Egg License.
https://agriculture.sc.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Egg-License-Application-Packet.pdf Then I have to candle, bleach wash, refrigerate them, size the eggs...
Another of the younger Brown pullets started laying today. Wife got 2 brown eggs this morning and I got 5 white and 2 browns this afternoon, with one of mine looking like a newbie (pale brown with white specs) just like the other Browns did. Only two more pullets left to start laying.
This is...
Sometimes I just put my phone next to my work computer streaming the chickens and hit the voice button to give the girls a pep talk. I can’t be the only that does this , right? 😄
Butchering up a deer and have been removing the silver and wondering if the chickens could/should eat it?
And just for curiosity, could I feed it to my dogs if I dehydrate it and use it as a snack/treat? Anyone know about this?
So how are you all doing this year?
I Finally got out in the blind to hunt this weekend at a family farm and got a 6 point as it come to the edge of the field opening. Noticing that was a heavy acorn season around here and deer are still hitting the oaks really heavy and ignoring the clover...
So 6 of our 11 pullets began laying 2 weeks ago in the nesting boxes with out a problem; we have golf balls as fake eggs in all 3 nesting boxes. We haven't gone inside the coop for about 1.5 weeks as we have a door to pull the poop boards out for cleaning. This Sunday I went into the coop and...
Yesterday I was in a discussion on a thread about eggs sizes and how long it takes them to get bigger. @Ridgerunner suggested that I might want to create a thread about how the eggs grew in size over time. So, pictures on a little measuring board with dates it is.
Backstory on the pullets...
Since I stopped believing hens laid eggs a week or so ago, here is the 1st egg from the Easter Bunny. Dropped off Fri, Sat, Sun, or Monday morning as we were out of town and I found it this evening. Btw approximately 20 weeks
and a few of them are eating the oyster shell. Is this a sign that a few of them are getting ready to lay OR are they eating it because it’s something new in the coop.
17 week and I believed 10 week pullets, breeds and number listed in signature
Question is, should I mix the starter/grower I already have and add all flock/flock raiser, so they can ease into the new type of feed?
Chickens are hitting 17 weeks and I'm down to about 15 pounds of starter/grower feed and need to get some more feed. I will be switching to all flock/flock...
