I have a sapphire gem and smokey pearl pullet, both hatched 3/5/23. It is now exactly 3 months later, and both have deep red combs and waddles and are already starting to squat when approached. It seems a bit early, but these are sure-fire signs of coming into lay. Wouldn't it be way too early...
Conflicting information! The vet I spoke with said 21-60 days. Another vet says no need for egg withdrawal.
One website says do NOT use with eggs for human consumption. Another says zero day withdrawal period.
This morning we said goodbye to the top hen in our small flock, a beautiful Blue Copper Marans-Cream Legbar olive egger. She was the ever-vigilant, benevolent, and gentle leader. She was truly my favorite chicken.
Her symptoms were a crumbly sound in her lungs when she breathed, pale...
I have three hens that aren't laying right now. Combs and waddles look pale, losing weight. Finally I checked one's vent and saw tiny bugs crawling around the opening and in the feathers. I assume these are mites. It would definitely explain things. What is the absolute BEST way to get rid of...
Here are the symptoms
Watery diarrhea, laying soft-shelled eggs, eyes foaming up, lack of appetite, lethargic, roosting during the day, sleeping alone at night
Should I do a corid drench? I'm worried about the rest of the flock, but she has been separated.
I ordered a silver laced Wyandotte from Cackle three weeks ago. I posted in a Silver Laced Wyandotte FB group, and the admin said, "that's not a silver laced wyandotte." Now I'm worried. Opinions?
Before I go on, I would like to assure everyone that we went through the proper means of integration. It's been a few weeks and our new hen is still picking on the original members of the flock. One of the original girls has even taken to roosting by herself. She sits at the entrance of the coop...
I thought this little one had poop stuck to her feet, but upon further examination and a soak in diluted Dawn and Epsom salts it doesn't seem to be dissolving. Now I'm worried.
Edited
I just got 4 babies today. They're stressed, pecking each other, chirping a lot. They don't seem to understand the Mama Pad. The temp of the Mama Pad where their backs would touch is 100-105°. It's around 80° in the other part of the brooder near the food and water. It's curved in a cave...
I have a new hen, and I can't believe I haven't noticed this before, but she appears not to have earlobes. She is an Olive Egger, but I'm not sure the mix of breeds.
Is this a deformity, a characteristic of certain breeds, or a sign of anything else? My other chickens of all breeds have big...
Edit- I have discovered that she has a vent prolapse. I have given her a warm bath, blow dried her feathers, and used a rubber glove to apply Preparation H and hold the vent back inside of her body for a few minutes. Then, I put her in a separate cage with food and water so she won't lay any...
I got these Pullets last September (2021), and I really have no idea how old they were when I got them. They all came into lay around January (2022).
I appreciate it, thank you
We have a new hen, the sole survivor of a large flock. She was in a pretty muddy outdoor run that wasn't too clean or covered. I'm letting her hang out in the house with us and noticed her butt fluff has hardened, darkened feathers. She has normal looking poop. Should we try to bathe her? If so...
She definitely looks like she has some leghorn, there were a lot of leghorns in the flock. But she lays a green egg, and had dark gray legs. What kind of cross is she?
I just got her home. I am also gonna need tips for quarantine. Thanks
I would like to add a couple more chickens to our tiny flock of four. The poultry veterinarian advised us not to add any more chickens to an established flock. She says that this can cause some problems that we may not feel like dealing with. But I don't think four is enough to keep us from...
