Nearing hatch day blocking off nesting box in coop or move her

I have a first time broody (raised by my other broody). She started with 14 eggs and then I reduced to 10 by candling. Over time less and less were viable and now she has 4. Between Monday and Wednesday will be 21 days (eggs were a couple days apart). Anyway, she is in the favorite nesting...

    6 chicks

Got some chicks for my broody, but I think they were already too old (they're like 3 days old). I'm in soCal (north OC) I want them all to go together. I'm hoping to get back what I paid for them ($8 a piece). They are: 2 dark brahmas, 2 light brahmas, 1 buff orpington and one barred rock.

    Mixed breed chicks what sex

I got some fertilized eggs from a small chicken farm for my broody hen, so they're all mixed breeds. They're about a month old, so pretty early to sex, I know, but just for fun. I have seven chicks. One (#2) I'm certain is a male. Anyway, here are the pics. #1 and #2 don't have a feathered tail yet.

Broody hen left: Day 22 one egg left, no signs of a pip

My broody hen had 8 eggs. 7 have hatched (last two last night). She left the nest today and there was one egg on there no signs of a pip. I tried to put it back under her, but she moved. So I candled it and did a water test. Other than lack of movement, it looks viable. It felt a bit cool when I...

    Egg partially hatching under broody

Today is day 21 for some eggs I put under my broody. I checked on her and one egg looked this the pic. The chick isn't moving or making sounds. It's very hot here in SoCal so I want to remove any chicks that don't make it asap. This is my first time with hatching chicks. Does this look normal? I...

    Shell-less egg outside of coop

I have a pullet that has laid 2 eggs now and i think she laid a shell-less egg today. While I'm understanding that it's normal for this stage of new egg laying, I am wondering about other details. I let them out of the run this evening, like I do most evenings and later I saw one of the girls...

    Easter eggers sexing help

We had one of our original chicks turn out to be a rooster so we traded him for a female from a family member. But now I'm concerned that the one we got is a rooster too 😆 It's an Easter egger. She's about 3 months old. Here's pics of Princess Hans of the Southern Isles

    Crop issues

My 7 week old pullet started showing signs of crop issues yesterday. She kept moving around trying to adjust her crop. It was obviously big. She also spit up some when I was trying to look inside her mouth. I took her out yesterday and put her in the garage to restrict her food and gave her...

    How to open beak

I keep reading about folks giving their chickens oil, medicine, etc. and how you're supposed to put it in their mouth. How do you open their beak and keep it open long enough to put stuff in? Thanks!

6 week old speckled Sussex - male or female?

We got 5 chicks a little over a month ago and we have only one speckled Sussex. She and the new Hampshire red are the smallest of the bunch, but I'm wondering if the speckled Sussex is a male. Her tail feathers droop a but and she now has a comb and waddles developing. And her back feathers seem...

    Hello from SoCal

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We had 2 chickens (cuckoo Maran and barred PR) in Seattle a few years ago and now in SoCal we just got 5 chicks that are now 6 weeks old (2) How many chickens do you have right now? Oops, see above, we currently have 5 in urban...
