    Squatting but no egg

I have a flock of 3 year old hens. BCM and EE. My lavender EE lays green eggs. The only one in the flock who has this color. I'm fairly certain every one is laying again after the winter break. But I cannot find the green eggs. I have searched the yard (they are fenced into 1/4 acre) but...

To cull or not to cull?

I've got egg eaters. Second season of this behavior. I got roll away boxes, which they only use if there are sufficient wood chips, which then prevent the eggs rolling down. :he My husband is in favor of culling, but they are only 3 years old. Thoughts?

    Extra shelter for ice storm

Expecting .25" of ice followed by snow. My birds are dumb and won't hang out in the coop during inclement weather. I constructed a shelter but they are scared of the tarp. I have a sun shade from summer they are not afraid of but I doubt it will hold up to winter weather. Any ideas?

    Roll away nest box

I need ideas for a converting my milk crate nesting boxes into roll aways. I can't catch nor dissuade this egg eater. Our coop is small so I haven't much space (or if just buy one). Any ideas?

    Anyone use unconventional heating methods?

I never thought I'd consider heating my coop, but this last cold snap had us below 20°F for several days. We have our first case of mild frostbite. Coop is ventilated. I don't want a heat lamp. I was considering something like heated pipe wrap on the walls or under the bottom. Just curious if...

    Horizontal nipple waterer freezing

I switched to a nipple waterer in a five gallon bucket for winter. It's got a heater inside, but the Nipples are already freezing. It's only 20 today and expected to be colder the next few days. Any tips?

    Is my husband right?

Settle this argument. 😉 I bought a box of Christmas cards. There are four style of cards. One says happy holidays, mentions the season inside, etc. But no mention of Christmas, the rest do. This is the card in question. We have a card exchange at our little church in a small town (I'm...

    No molt

I have two hens that don't seem to be molting. They are the only ones still laying. It's a young flock so this is the first molt for everyone. They have pretty rough looking plumage. Are they just later than everyone or is something amiss?

This BCM has feathers around the head turning white. She's a year old. No other BCMs have this. Molt approaching? Thanks.

    Bumblefoot question

How can you tell if you got it all out? This is my first case. I don't want to dig unnecessarily.

    Dark fabric for windows

My EEs are waking up at 530 and not quiet about it. I'm in town so I would like to curb this behavior, if possible. Would dark fabric over the hardcloth windows help? Is there anything breathable enough?

    Water glassing question

I just tried my first water glassing in a large gallon jar. I measured water and lime, but did not leave quite enough room for displacement. I want to put more eggs in, but I have to remove water and that mixes up the ratio, right? Do I have to leave it as is?

    Egg preservation

I want to attempt to keep eggs for next winter. Is there a method besides water glassing that anyone here has tried? I read about mineral oil but dunno anyone who has done it. Thanks

How to fix a jerk of a chicken?

I have a hen that has become a complete A hole. She's kind of a rooster to the flock (no males present). She's a good layer, so I don't want to remove her, but she's chasing the dog and sometimes comes after me and I'm over it. I've tried holding her down a couple times, but no improvement...

    Mystery illness

My year old Ameracauna is acting a bit off. She hasn't laid in a few days. Has a tucked in appearance sometimes. She eats, drinks, forages, poops, roosts, etc. most of the time. I thought she was egg bound and treated for it for a couple days but I can't feel any egg. Crop is fine. No squishy...

    My first egg binding

I've a year old Ameracauna who I believe is egg bound. She hasn't laid in a couple days and she tends to lay daily. She has a slightly tucked in appearance. She still eats and drinks. She sat in the nest box but was unsuccessful. I have done two Epsom salt baths, after which she expelled a...

    Troubleshooting bedding and smells

I have a 10x4 coop. I used to have it on the ground, filled with shaving and leaves. Bedding lasted three months with no issue. We started having some issue with rain getting in so we put a floor on and elevated the coop. Now my bedding stinks after just 3 weeks. What an I doing wrong...

    Huge poops with fermented feed?

So, started fermenting feed about a week ago. They get it in the morning and then free access to pellets. Girls are outside eating what they can forage. Anyway, there are massive poops now. Like egg size or bigger. I am not concerned, just was curious if this usually happens.

    Frozen EE beard

My EE has a very pronounced beard and I noticed today the feathers are frozen. She's always been a sloppy drinker. No signs of frostbite. We'll be above freezing tomorrow afternoon at the earliest. Do I need to thaw it or is she good?

    Two nest box problems

I have 9 pullets and two nesting boxes. Only 3 actively laying. My first problem is my newest layer, an EE, who has never used the box. She's only been laying for a couple weeks but never in the box. Even when it's empty, clean, etc. I keep the boxes super clean. I have fake eggs inside. Ideas...
