Silkie has gone Broody - Will she leave her nest for food?

I found one of our Silkies in her nest today, sat on an egg, she's been there all day so i assume she has gone broody. I would like to just let her do her thing (unless it's not recommended) but it suddenly occurred to me, will she leave her nesting box to eat and drink? Her food and water is...

My girls aren't touching their Oyster Shells

Hello, I switched our two Silkies onto growers feed (we don't have the other one that isn't layers feed in the U.K, i forget the name) and gave them a tuna can of oyster shells in their coop. I was under the impression that if they needed extra calcium they would know to eat it and regulate how...

Should i put a light in the coop for during the day?

If it's raining and the coop window is closed it's pretty dark in there, i wonder if they may struggle seeing their food and water. I was thinking about putting some sort of battery powered (or solar) light on a sensor that only operates during the day. So when they go in during the day it will...

Difficulty choosing feed - No "all flock" available in the U.K

Hello, So i've come to the end of the layer pellets we had and have been reading about what is best to feed our two Silkies. From my reading, the best thing to do would probably be give "all flock" feed and have separate containers for oyster shells and grit. The problem is, here in the U.K we...

How thick should the roosting bar be? Conflicting info online (Silkies)

So the consensus on here seems to be using a 2 x 4 with the wide side up. I read elsewhere that the chickens need to be able to wrap their feet around the bar else they can develop bumble foot and 4" would not allow them to do this. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this statement? Cheers

Possible impacted crop but seemed to go down - Should i worry?

Hello, I'm quite new to chicken keeping and this morning as i was taking our Silkies to their run i noticed one of their crops hadn't gone down overnight. Felt very solid about the size of a golf ball. She kept just drinking water (like non-stop) until the afternoon when i took her out and the...

How to fit posts to base and to postcrete or not

Hello, We purchased a second hand coop which i now am attempting to build a raised base for. The coop is about 4ft x 4ft x 4ft and very very heavy. Does anyone here know which is the best way to connect the posts to the base to raise it, method 1 where the force would be held by 4 screws from...

Toxoplasmosis in Chickens - How serious is it?

Hello, We recently got two Silkies and last night i was reading about chicken parasites where i discovered they can get the dreaded T. Gondii. The problem is, we have like 4 of the neighbours cats that come into our garden and use it as a toilet (as well as try and eat our girls). I hadn't even...

Best way to clean and protect wood of second hand coop

Hello, We purchased a second hand coop the other day, the guy didn't have any chickens left and just said something about he got rid of them which is a bit worrying. I've scrubbed it down with soapy water and a brush and then planning on spraying it with poultry safe disinfectant then powdering...

One laying Hen and one not laying - Which food + Grit suitability

Hello, We recently got two Silkies about 26 weeks old and i was pleasantly surprised to find one of them had laid their very first egg yesterday. They are currently on growers feed but obviously now one of them needs layers feed. Don't really have any way to separate their feed so wondered what...

Is this wire mesh suitable for chicken run?

Hello, I can't seem to find a definitive answer online about which mesh to use. We have two Silkies that will be kept in a run in the day, which currently has chicken wire on it which i know won't keep much out. I found this and the price is good, does this look suitable to keep the girls safe...
