I picked up some all purpose sand to use as a sand bath for my quail. I’m worried that it might be too fine tho? It consists of about 95% sand and 5% small pebbles.
I put some in a shallow container and set it out for the jumbo whites. A couple jumped right in and started rolling in it. They...
I ordered a Black Ameraucana and an Olive Egger from Meyer Hatchery on the same order, hatched Oct 14th. Meyer are known to use Black Ameraucanas for their Olive Egger hybrids.
I can’t tell the two apart other than one has a bigger messier tail (front) and one has a smaller neater tail (rear)...
Is some loss of new hatched chicks fairly normal?
I set 96 eggs. Around 50 hatched around Jan 20th. Some were culled by me due to either deformity or failure to thrive right out of the incubator. I’ve lost one or two per day in the brooder. I’m down to 42.
Is this fairly normal for quail...
This chick just hatched with a bit of assistance. It had been zipped for at least 8 hours I think? If not more. All I did was pull the cap off the egg off and it popped the rest of the way out itself.
The feet seem extra curled and flat. And it appears to be unable to move either leg. It’s been...
****EDIT**** Hatch is done, live stream is shut down.
My first incubation, my first hatch-a-long, my first quail. So many firsts!!
I have 96 *gulp* eggs that arrived today from MyShire. I originally ordered 30 Jumbo White Coturnix and 30 Rare Colors Mix Coturnix. A couple days after I...
My egg order shipped from MyShire on Dec 30th and is due to deliver today.
How long can I let my eggs sit on the counter before they start losing viability?
I’d like to set them to have hatch day be a Saturday but that would mean waiting to next…..Wednesday? and I feel like that’s too long.
My incubator delivered and I’ve set it up. I’ve been reading as much as I can since this will be my first time incubating eggs. I have an order for 60 quail eggs from MyShire that’s pending shipment.
My question is can I use this foam yoga mat if I cut a piece to size to protect the...
I can’t seem to find out why Cornish cross hatching eggs aren’t available for the back yard flock keeper to buy.
Is it just that the big hatcheries that keep the parent flocks don’t want to deal with small orders?
I’ve been reading this forum and some of the articles here about quail since I think I’d like to have a small covey.
1. I read here to not keep chickens and quail together. From seeing predatory tendencies first hand I know chickens would definitely try to catch and eat any quail kept within...
I dumped the dregs of a bag of medicated chick feed in the run for the chickens to scratch around for. It was maybe about 1-2 cups worth.
I didn’t think about it being medicated feed until after I had done it. It shouldn’t cause any issues with the adult hens getting it if it’s a one off treat?
This chick is 5 weeks old and is supposed to be a Welsummer pullet. I had brown leghorns with my last batch of chicks and at this stage I honestly can’t tell the difference.
Do I have to wait and see if she gets white earlobes? Or is there another way to tell?
My first couple batches of chicks were spring hatches so they were feathering up as the weather was warming up. That made it a no brainer on when to remove the heat plate.
This years batch was hatched Oct 14th...so 5 weeks old tomorrow. Their tiny 12" x 12" heat plate worked fine for the first...
This is Gimpy.
Gimpy hatched Oct 14th and seemed fine on arrival on Oct 16. The next day she seemed to have a bit of pasty butt so that was cleaned up. When I put her back in the brooder just after that she was favoring her left leg.
I gave it 24 hrs and checked her again, seemed fine on...
I received 12 chicks yesterday and am having a hard time figuring out which is which. A couple look very similar.
Here's my order list and numbered pics of everyone, except what I think is the splash ameraucana. I got home from work today and went to check on them and found her barely alive...
I started 2025 with 9 hens, close to the max my run will support as I'm limited on flat usable land and cant free range. I swore to myself no more chickens in 2025. I'm currently down to 3 of my OG hens due to rehoming chickens I didnt like/didnt fit with the flock.
I made the bad choice to...
Soooo....its late but chick fever has finally beat me down. I was just cruising my favorite hatchery's website and 90% of the breeds I want are available and hatching on Oct 14th.
I prefer to brood out in the coop on the floor in a dog crate with a heat plate from day 1. October high temps are...
