    Puffy eyes and bubbles

I noticed a little while ago that a couple of my chickens had a swollen, puffy eye, just one side. Similar thing happened last year, with maybe two or three birds. I made a post here, was told not to worry about it. It passed, they where fine. I figured it might have been mosquito or tick bites...

    6 week olds gender help

Usually I’m pretty good with telling the cockerels from pullets, but one of these guys has me paranoid b/c it’s not what I ordered (lakeside Egger pullet), so it could be anything, maybe a cockerel. Plus it had been lower feathering, larger and with a bigger comb from the beginning. Also I have...

    Broody?

I’ve had a hen sitting in the nest box the past two nights, not sure if she was there during the day yesterday, I forgot to check on her. Acting pretty broody, on 4 eggs, making “dinosaur noises”. She has done this a couple times in the past years, acting broody for a couple hours, then...

    Duck questions

Okay, so I don’t have any ducks yet, but I have been raising chickens for about 2 years now. I am wanting to get 3 ducklings next spring, to keep with my chickens. I have been doing lots of research, but have a couple questions that I want answered from you guys. I’m thinking I want to order...

    Can trauma stop egg laying?

This past May, 2 of my year old hens where left outside the coop, and attacked by a raccoon. One was killed, no sign of her but lots of feathers leading into the woods and some blood. The other was fine, no wounds just missing some feathers including all of her tail feathers. I have been at...

Kalmbach Feeds All Natural 16% Protein Flock Maintainer Pellet Poultry Feed

Is this a good feed for laying hens, non laying yet pullets, and a cockerel? I will provide oyster shell on the side. I am also thinking of adding a few ducks in the spring. https://www.chewy.com/kalmbach-feeds-all-natural-16-protein/dp/226631

I am planning to get ducklings this spring and I know the local tsc be feed stores don’t carry them. I have never mail ordered chicks before, just from feed stores and hatching my own. So I was wondering if you guys know what would be the closest good hatchery to ma, that carrys ducklings.

    Broody hen question

So, this is my first time having a real broody hen ( one of my hens pretends to be broody for a couple hours then quits all the time) and I am debating giving her eggs or trying to break her broodiness. She is a golden sex link who is about a year old, currently sitting on a fake egg I gave her...

    Heating pad cave with ducklings?

I am hoping to get ducklings next year, and wondering if the heating pad cave brooder setup I made this spring for my chicks could work for them. And also if they could be brooded outside in the coop. Here’s my post on it I made this spring...

8 week old cockerel in MA

Silkie x cinnamon queen cockerel in need of rehoming on cape cod and the islands area. He has feathered legs, extra toes and a feather crest. Good temperament, he needs to be rehomed because we have to many roosters.

Cockerels? (Cinnamon queen x silkie and golden sexlink x silkie)

Okay, so I’m just checking to make sure these are cockerels before I give one or two of them away. They are 7 weeks old. I am like 90% sure the first two are cockerels, and the last one I’m more unsure about. Thanks! (Ps. Is there something wrong with the last ones eyes?)

    Can chickens eat ferns?

So I’m making a vat of experimental dye with ferns, and I will be straining out the actual ferns from the water before adding fabric that has been mordanted. So these are basically just boiled/simmered fern leaves. My question is can I give these to the chickens after I remove them from the dye...

Broken beak on 5 week old chick

This chick broke her beak, unknown how. When I saw her she was being swarmed by the rest of the chicks (because of the blood), I took her out and rinsed it. She is inside with me now, and the break is very small, I am mostly concerned about bullies. Any advice welcome.

Sudden death of year old rooster

Today I had all my chickens locked up in their run (often I free range if I’m home) and I was letting the littles (4 week olds) run around with the rest of my flock. I went inside for 1 hour maybe 2 hours, and when I come back out to check on the chicks, my silkie rooster was dead in the middle...

Help sexing these 4 week old mixes

These are mostly a mix of cinnamon queen or golden sex link hen with a silkie rooster. The two black ones at the end are barnyard mixes. Thanks in advance for any guesses! (Just one picture of each bird) the third one and the fifth one look a little bit cockerel like to me.

    When can you tell?

I was just wondering at what age you can sex chicks. I have some four week old chicks, and was wondering when I could post pictures here for you guys to tell/guess. Thanks!

Chick with less fluff is being bullied

Chick that hatched today has less fluff on back. Skin showing so other chicks peck. Another chick that hatched today that is doing fine and fluffy for reference (and cuteness):

My version of mamma heating pad (or robot mom as we have been calling it)

We are doing the chicks brooder out in the coop this year with a heating pad cave. Brooder is an old Guinea pig cage with pine shavings. Here’s the contraption I made. Heating pad tied to the underside of a bent piece of lobster trap to make the cave, and an old towel on top to finish it off...
