Prepare yourselves. I have a suprise. I just hatched out a SILVER Cayuga. That's right. A SILVER Cayuga. Their parent stock are black Cayugas. I was under the impression that Cayugas were black and only black. But this little guy just hatched out and he is silver. I'm talking with all of my...
I attended a webinar yesterday on raising chicks properly. This was run by Jeff Maddox and Rip Stalvey. They are both experts in their fields. Jeff Maddox is a Nutritionist from Fertrell and Rip Stalvey is a retired APA judge. I took some notes during the webinar, so here you go!
Brooding Baby...
I'm back! I took an accidental hiatus due to oa lot of life changes. I had to move, almost lost all my birds, and got a new job. I no longer have the hookbills, gray calls, or white calls. I plan on being a little more active on here now that things have leveled out. I'll try my best to catch up...
Good morning everyone,
I bought two young bantam cochins at the Ohio National a few weeks ago. I brought them home, and put them in quarantine. After a day, both had a sneeze and very light gurgling when breathing. I immediately treated them with All-in-One powder, which treats multiple...
Good morning everyone!
I am making a Christmas/Birthday wish list. I had multiple people asking me what I would like for Christmas and my birthday, so I'm making an online wish list. My question for you guys is, what's on your wish list? Preferably poultry/waterfowl related.
So I usually add whole oats to my flock's feed when the weather gets cooler. In the past, I kind of just added it by eye but never really broke down the exact amount I should be adding. My feed is a 22% show flock pellet. What ratio do y'all use when adding oats?
I'm looking for some book recommendations. Preferably books on poultry, waterfowl, genetics, etc. I already have the following books:
- Call Duck Breed Book
- Start Where You are With What You Have
- Bantam Wyandotte book
- Breeding and Raising Waterfowl
Good morning everyone!
This past Saturday I attended the Appalachain Classic in Morehead, KY. There were over 1,200 birds in the show and more in the sale area. I brought only chickens this time around. Wanted to give the ducks a break before I bring most of the ducks I have to the Dalton, GA...
Good morning everyone!
This week is exciting in many ways. The election and more exciting, the Ohio National Poultry Show. The Ohio National is one of the biggest shows in the US. Last year the APA held their 150th anniversary show at the Ohio National. There were 10,600 birds in the show! That...
(Question at the end)
I'm posting this to keep track and keep y'all updated on this long project. You guys know, I raise Wyandotte bantams. I have partridge, white, and now black. I am wanting to make the UK's blue partridge. That is basically blue and partridge together. Here is a picture of...
I have studied genetics in college, but I got a little rusty. So I looked up different games that I could play to freshen up. I like playing games to learn genetics because it really puts it in perspective. Here's a game I just finished. It's a little tricky towards the end, but it's a good...
Good morning everyone,
I've been extremely busy lately. I had to take in a group of Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock bantams from a kid that's off to college. I'm going to be taking care of them and breeding them while he's in school. They are beautiful birds, I'll attach pictures below.
The...
Goodmorning everyone!
I am working on my spreadsheets to prepare for the upcoming hatching/breeding season. I follow Poultry Keepers 360 on Facebook and they have TONS of extremely helpful information there. I thought I would share the spreadsheet I found on their page. If you are just a hobby...
If you've been following my posts, you'll know that I had a cockerel die after battling some illness. I got a preliminary report Wednesday, and then this one today. One thing that stands out is the "Overgrowth" of a certain bacteria. Could you guys look this over and tell me what you think? I'm...
Following up from my last threads. I have been injecting Tylan 50 into my sick birds. I got an initial necropsy report back and one of the things they noticed was that there was a "focal hemmorrage" in the pectoral muscle. I would think this is due to the injection, so I want to start giving the...
Attached is the preliminary necropsy report for my white wyandotte cockerel. This is only what they found visually. They are running multiple tests that should be back later this week.
A few things that stick out to me:
- Green/gray lung
- right pectoral muscle has a focal hemorrage: I think...
Morning everyone
I have a sick hen. I'm treating her now and was wondering. How long after her symptoms stop can I reintroduce her to the main flock? She's still sick right now but not sure how long to wait to put her back when she's better.
Good morning everyone
I just wanted to rant. Today is a fun day for me (not). I take ADHD medications. Whether you support that or not, it helps me tremendously due to not only my ADHD, but my panic disorder. It's a long story, but without medication, my head becomes overwhelmed with thoughts...
Good morning everyone
I just lost my only white wyandotte cockerel to what I assume is fowl cholera. I tried what I could but he just couldn't fight it. Now my white hen is starting to get sick again and I want to do everything I can to prevent it from getting as bad as the cockerel. Also, the...
Goodmorning everyone
I'm selling a trio of hookbills to cover the price a necropsy for one of my birds. One grey male, one grey female, and one dusky grey female. I'm in Nashville, TN but I will be driving to Hopkinsville, KY to drop off the deceased bird at a laboratory. Please send me a...
