    Injured Rooster

My rooster has been in a cage in my bathroom for 4 weeks. Can I just put him back in his pen (after we see the vet tomorrow) as he is one of two roosters in that pen, or is it still put him in after lights out? (Never had to deal with this situation before) Thank you in advance.

    Injured rooster

Connected but separate ... we had an escapee rooster, which is why we may have fertile eggs, and in the process of returning him to his pen, I think I broke his 'hip'. Does anyone know if this injury would be repairable? He's been on confinement in my bathroom in a cage (per vet advice) for 4...

How long to keep fertile eggs?

What is the time limit for keeping 'fertile eggs' before they need to be put in to hatch? Connected but separate ... we had an escapee rooster, which is why we may have fertile eggs, and in the process of returning him to his pen, I think I broke his 'hip'. Does anyone know if this injury...

    Bumblefoot

Is there a way to treat this at home? I am planning to take her the vet.

    Is this good or bad?

I've been seeing this for the last couple of days, but not really sure what's going on. Is this a good thing or would it be a bad thing if the boys weren't separate to the girls? I've noticed different behaviours between the boys and the girls at different times, but like I said I don't really...

    Ash in feed?

I know there are more knowledgeable people on here than me, so, why does my new bag of layer pellets smell like it contains cigarette ash? It is a different brand than I'm used to, and my first thoughts were of sheep nuts, and after mixing what remained of the old bag in with the new, my hand...

    Any guesses?

I know these two are roos, but any guesses as to breeds? I know someone said the all white one can't be a leghorn because his legs aren't yellow they're a 'whitish' colour. (Colourblind too, so colours not my strong suit) wondering about the youngest, as he has a little 'tuft of hair' like my...

    Can anyone help?

This is probably in the wrong place ... is my yellow hen changing colour, or is the black because she's molted? I just see a lot of black and last time I tried to look closer I almost got a claw in my eye for my trouble.

    Eating feathers??

Is it normal for chickens to eat their own feathers during molting? My young 'pullet' - of 16 weeks - fired out several of her feathers, and then ate them! (I say pullet in inverted commas because the consensus on here was she's a girl, but so far no comb,(let alone a red one) and no wattles...

    Is this a silly question?

Like many of us the question of roo or pullet is real, but I'm curious, do young roosters try to hump roosters? I ask this as my 4 youngsters have gone into a pen together, and despite being advised that one of my birds is a rooster, it's hatchmate (who I know is a male) keeps trying to hump...

    Am I a boy too?

Up until now I have been convinced that Maud is a girl, but I recently noticed her comb is bright red and it looks like the wattles are developing. Could someone clarify if I'm right or wrong please.

    What breed am I?

I have 3, 20 day old chicks. I'm not worried about the gender right now, but I wondering if anyone can tell ne the breeds. The seller had a number of breeds (names I only recognize from being on here) but I don't know they are. It's just 'two yellows and one black' to me. I'm afraid the...

    Can chickens go blind?

Somehow that seems like a silly title, but my old girl (who isn't old) has not been right since about September last year when she did a major moult and stopped laying, and is yet to start again. This isn't really a big worry, but she is slow to join the girls for breakfast, and is very unsteady...

A silly question, but how do I know if babies died in their egg?

Three of my nine eggs have hatched, so I decided to candle a couple of the others. The first one seems full of light, and a dark patch to one side, much like at a week gestation, so I'm guessing that one is dead. The second one is also lit well, but more mass and practically jumped out of my...

    Can I help fix it?

My chick has been trying to get out for a long while. Her two siblings were much quicker at getting out of their shells, and I realized there wasn't enough humidity. My error, and a flaw with the Brinsea, at least for me. If I increase the humidity might this help her to finally escape her shell?

Can anyone HELP tell me what I'm looking at?

Is this just yolk residue? Or is it something else? Edit ... it seems to have come away, so I think I guessed correctly.

    My first successful candling!

Though I can look at the issue logically now, I had never grasped a concept ... the baby is in the yolk! That sounds so stupid and simple but it had always evaded me. I have candled eggs in the past and always been disappointed at seeing nothing. So after reading a piece on here I thought I'd...

    Extra eggs

This is going to be a very silly question since I'm sure that the answer is no, is it normal for a henbyo kay twice in one day? I ask this because I collected 2 eggs this morning, and dated them, and just collected 3 eggs. This might not be strange for 5 hens to lay 5 eggs, but two of the eggs...

    Herring!

Saw a comment on here where someone had commented about giving their girls some herring, so yesterday I bought some to treat my girls. They ate it ravenously and even fought over pieces. Great, I thought. A nice treat. It came from my local store but was covered in foreign writing, but since...

Am I right that the senior chicken leads the 'to roost' display?

I've noticed over the last few times putting the girls to bed that they go in in slightly differing order. Tonight it was led by two teenagers, then the two hens, then last teenager. Does the top position regularly change? Does anyone know what the rules are for this change? Considering I...
