I have a 20 day old egg that has been sitting under broodies and was successfully candled as of last night. Looked like a big air cell and still had veining and there was movement. Today, I noticed it has a faint crack and small ( pip hole maybe) near the narrower end of the egg. Since it stayed...
Does anyone know what chicks from a Buff Brahma male and an Opal Legbar female could look like? Also, a Red Dorking Bantam female and a Silkie Splash male? I am curious to know this before I try hatching chicks.
I'm sorry if the lighting on the egg isn't great, but I'm wondering if this one looks alive? There is an embryo there, with veins coming out from the bottom of it and going down towards the bottom of the egg? No sloshing around...stays still, and no blood ring. I dont see a lot of veins, so I...
I have a 9-10 month old Welsummer that is exhibiting some weird behavior....guessing that she has gone broody? Cornelia will at times sit om a nesting box full of eggs for HOURS and lay an egg herself. She growls, is hot, and pecks my hand if I try to reach under her to get the eggs. She will...
I have a new egg layer and I am guessing it is either one of my 2 Partridge Pendesencas or the Golden Cuckoo Marans. What do you think? It is the egg in the middle in the picture.
I recently found this on Chewy and have been feeding it to my flock alongside Purina Layena or Kalmbach All-Flock. I'm feeding less of it at a time because it is somewhat expensive. It looks to be made completely of whole grains ( corn, a few other things), and claims to have Omega-3's and...
I have a pullet that is pecking at the top of it's tail, pulling out featgers and becoming more and more bloody. Not sure what caused it and what to do. It is difficult to wrap it with vet wrap. Is there something to put on it to make her stop wanting to peck it?
What should I feed my hens to make the yolks deep orange, rather than a medium yellow? I'm not letting them free range anymore because of hawk attacks. I have heard different advice on this...insects, peppers, but these things, in small amounts, don't seem to make much difference. Any other...
I have a new egglayer out of 18 young pullets, which are almost all different breeds. This could either be my Golden Cuckoo Marans, my Salmon Faverolle, or a Swedish Flower hen. Which do you think it is? I am guessing it is the Salmon Faverolle. All 3 are 22 weeks old now. The egg is large in size.
I was just wondering if anyone has noticed how long it takes, from seeing the comb and wattles redden, to the day of a pullet's 1st egg? Is it different for all pullets or is there a typical timeline. I have 4 pullets that have had red combs/ wattles for a week or two now, and still no eggs. Thanks.
I have a Silkie Splash cockerel, around 16wks old. He is free only to a good home and one that already has chickens. He gets along well with my other pullets, cockerels, and hens.
Does anyone have experience with skunks getting their chickens and have tips on how to secure their run coop from these animals? I'm not sure that's my predator yet, but I saw one on my property this morning and wanted tips. Thanks
I went out to coop/run this morning to find chickens' large feeder knocked over, huge pile of shavings dug thru outside of the run, and a gaping hole where something got in. Whatever it was killed my buff Silkie cockerel, Beaker. Took only head, apparently? And left all the other pullets/...
I have a 14 week old Black Silkie that is supposed to be a male. I have several other Silkie males ( different colors) and all seem bossier and more temperamental than this one. The flat to nonexistent comb and fluffier butt make me think this one might actually be female. I would be thrilled if...
My hen, which was attacked by a hawk a few days ago, and has since been acting pretty normal, has this wound. I am washing and putting anti ointment, electrolytes each day in water, and giving aspirin and waiting on antibiotics to arrive in the mail. Has anyone experienced a wound like this...
MY scalped Egyptian Fayoumis pullet's head is now completely healed so that the large black scab is gone and replaced by pale pink skin near white feathers. Do you all recommend letting her reintegrate using blukote on her head, or will her bare pink head
My hen was attacked by a hawk. Here is a picture. It is above the wing. There is a deep injury, where you can see both bone and muscle. She is acting stunned, but is now walking around again like nothing happened. Is there any way I can treat this myself? It is a deep wound and not sure what's...
I have a couple of hens acquired as 14 week old pullets from a hatchery that are much more skittish towards people, and aggressive towards my chicks, than any of my hens which were acquired as chicks and hand-raised by us. These two hens are different breeds. They also happen to be at the bottom...
