Can chickens eat through a chicken-wire barrier?

Yes, this is another squirrel-problem thread. :( Our yard borders the woods so we have dozens, probably more, foraging for food in our yard all year long. We didn't mind so much before we had chickens, and even after getting the chickens I was "OK" with them because the chickens didn't...

Teach me how to free range with dogs, please

This very possibly might be a post I should put on a dog behavior forum but thought I'd try here first because I know some of you have both chickens and dogs and may have some tips. Situation: I have a large fenced-in yard, and within that fenced in yard is a smaller fenced in section that...

Scared of squirrels or just love their coop?

I have squirrels... LOTS of squirrels. Our backyard is all woods and we have lots of bird feeders in the yard so we're actually feeding squirrels, too, which was OK, but not anymore. I recently got chickens and the squirrels are easily getting through the openings on my Producer's Pride 10'...

7 week old chicks - should I be force-handling them?

Hard to believe they are only 7-8 weeks old - they look like full grown chickens already! They've been living outdoors in their coop and run for about 3 weeks now and have acclimated well. I'm out there at least 4 times a day to feed, water, check, socialize, etc. and they now come running...

Another integrating question - but in reverse

Sorry - I know there are tons of integrating posts and I've read a lot of them, but haven't found one yet that matches my situation. I have six 6 or 7 week old chicks that I've had since they were a few days old that are nicely now living outdoors. The coop and run are the Producers Pride...

    Roo? Can I replace?

I apologize but need the opinion of seasoned chicken people. I think I have two males out of the eight baby chicks I purchased that were supposedly sexed. If these are males I need to find a new home for them. But I really wanted 8 to 10 chicks: if I buy a couple of newly hatched now will...

    Should I handle baby chicks?

I purchased 8 chicks from TSC 16 days ago - I'm guessing they were probably 3 days old at the time? They've been in my spare bedroom since then and I visit them several times a day to freshen their water, add more feed, clean their bedding, etc. I'm thinking in a few weeks they can go...

Do I need to predator-proof these gaps?

I've gotten three sides of my coop predator-proofed, just have to do the small piece on the backside near the coop, and then use lumber or rocks to make sure nothing crawls under the coop. Is there any predator that is going to get through these gaps between the support poles?

How level does the ground need to be?

We will soon be assembling the coop and run and my husband's obsession and concern is with getting the land perfectl flat before we begin. It's just a slight incline, hardly noticeable, but since we're both OCD about that type of thing, he's thinking of spending a day digging up the higher...

Coop close to fence more or less dangerous to predators?

Purchased the coop and run and are preparing the area for placement. The plan is to have the coop close to our 6 foot stockade fence (just enough space for me to go back there and retrieve eggs). But now I wonder if having it that close to a wooden tall fence makes it easier for other...

    What age should I get?

New to chicks and reading and researching all I can get my hands on before I actually bringhome some chicks. Purchased the coop and run yesterday but it will be a few weeks before we level the ground, assemble the equipment, and predator proof the area. My dilemma is whether I should get...

New to chickens but NOT new to animals

Yup, I have been accused of having a "zoo" all my life, including ducks, goats, monkeys, many parrots, dog, cats, turtles, chameleons, hamsters, snakes, ponds, saltwater tanks/seahorses... you name it, I've probably rescued it/fostered it/adopted it/rehabbed it. But never (yet) chickens! Been...
