    RIP Chickaletta

My EE hen Chickaletta died today. When I found her, she had a bunch of feathers around her. I noticed she had this bald spot. She didn’t have it before; it’s noticeable enough that I feel confident I would have noticed it. Is it possible the other hens pulled out feathers after she died? Is that...

    Are these eggs still good?

I busted an illegal nest yesterday! There were four eggs in it. It’s been pretty hot, high 90s. I usually collect everyday, and I’ve blocked off access to the illegal nest so my criminal hopefully goes back to laying in the nesting boxes. But are the four eggs ok to eat or should I repurpose them?

    Frizzled Polish: guys or gals?

My Polish chicks are 2 months old! What’s your vote for these chicks? Here are my guesses. I’m not certain so I’d appreciate your feedback! Zucchini: cockerel Squash: uh… idk, maybe cockerel? Maple: pullet (also does she have cross beak??) Stick: …pullet..? Not sure. Pinecone: pullet...

    Brooding outside in bad weather

My 6 polish chicks are 2.5 weeks old! I’m trying to get them used to the outside so I can finish brooding them out there. Here’s the weather for the next 10 days (spoiler, it’s dreadful!). Storms can be fierce here, with high winds and lots of water/flooding. Should I hold off? Can it be done...

    Chicks with poor balance

I have two Polish chicks that we hatched; they are 2 weeks old. They are struggling to walk and have poor balance. I’ve been giving them some vitamin b complex. Is that the best treatment? What else can I do to help them get better? Here’s a video of what they look like.

    Can I dose everyone?

Two of my chicks are having balance issues. They are sitting down/walking on their hocks, and one has to use her wings for balance. They can stand but shuffle around. Researching here, it seems that giving Vitamin B complex, electrolytes, and a bit of Vitamin E for good measure is the right...

    Fighting over the thermostat

I’ve seen two of my chicks out from under the brooder plate several times; they seem like maybe they were too hot. Sometimes they go under there too, though. I’ve got the plate on a slant so one side is warmer than the other. Should I raise the cooler side even more or is it ok if sometimes...

    Is this pasty butt?

We hatched this chick about 2 days ago! Is this pasty butt or some remnant of the hatching?

    Early pip?

It’s halfway through Day 18 on my first time hatching eggs, and one has an external pip! Does this early pip mean I’ve done something wrong with the hatch? I’ve increased the humidity once I noticed the pip. I wasn’t expecting any action so soon!

    Rats… *heavy sigh*

Yeah ok we have rats. I hate them. They creep me out. I’ve read a lot on this forum about what to do, and it seems that removing food sources/hiding spots is the best way to go. In all of your experience, is just getting a treadle feeder or something sufficient, or should I couple that with...

Friends for Jadwiga Hatch a Long!

After searching high and low, I've finally found some Polish eggs to hatch! Our white Polish chicken, Jadwiga, is too beautiful for her peers (see majestic pic of her in a tree) and so they bully her incessantly. We've separated her and built her a Palace of her own, and now it's time to...

    Possible poisoning? Please help

We found our Polish like this just now. I often let her free range while we are outside because she’s my favorite. I stupidly forgot that my husband sprayed for bugs about 24 hours earlier. She had no issues before this. She is on chick feed for the protein. Is it possible this is some...

    What breeds would be compatible?

My husband sums up our situation pretty well: “It’s good that chickens won’t have to face God one day, because 98% of them are going to hell.” Let me explain. My whole flock was picking on my White Polish, Jadwiga. They were vicious, all of them. It got so bad that she had to be permanently...

Do you have an idea of why she died? :(

We found one of our older hens, Olive, dead tonight. This is the first time I’ve had a bird die, so it was unexpected and I’m not sure what happened. Possibly Relevant Facts: -She was an olive egger, around 3-5 years old. -She and most of the flock accidentally slept outside of the coop last...

    If you were me…

… and you were going out of town, would you get pinless peepers for the whole flock (8 birds) to spare the one that’s getting her crest pecked out, or find someone to watch her personally? Deep sigh. Why do chickens love pecking out feathers.

Polish Crest Pecked Out. I’m at my wits end, please help :(

Here is the original thread about my poor Jadwiga, but now I need some more help for her. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/what-even-is-that-white-polish-weirdness-help.1643602/page-2#post-28154058 The TL;DR is her flock mates were pecking out her crest and I couldn’t find any way to...

    Working out the egg-laying kinks?

Five of my seven pullets are laying eggs! It is so exciting and fun. But there have been some questionable egg laying tactics. One pullet makes a little nest in the corner of the coop and has laid her first two brown with white speckles eggs there! It’s the only place my camera can’t see so...

    Our First Eggs! 🥚 🍳

Today we enjoyed a breakfast courtesy of our girls’ very first eggs! Only two of my seven pullets are laying, but we are very excited to collect these little eggs every morning! Pictures: Liandrin and Elaida, who are laying, and our four eggs over three days!

    First time layers and wintertime

I have some 19 week old pullets! I have 3 RIR, 3 EE and 1 White Polish. We are getting about 10 hours of daylight. Are any of these breeds likely to start laying in winter time? Looking forward to my first thousand dollar egg!! 🥚🤩

Single hen introduction; should I let her hide?

I have been integrating a single pullet into my flock of 8 (2 hens, 6 pullets). It’s been rough of course! We did look but no touch for a few days, then a supervised introduction. There was a lot of conflict but no blood, which I have read is normal. There is a lot of clutter and hiding places...
