I have a plan. Currently, I have six sweet, lovely ladies who predictably give me five eggs per day, and they are beautiful--both the chickens and the eggs. Eventually, it would be nice to add a little color and variety to my flock. We are all aware of the talk of high-priced eggs, sold-out...
I have had this question in the back of my mind for quite a while and would like clarification. Do laying chickens need grit, or oyster shells, or must they have both? I do realize grit helps with digestion and oyster shells provide calcuim, but does grit also provide calcium?
Several weeks ago, I decided to add sprouting seeds to my repertoire of skills. I began reading and watching instructions until my computer's battery charge ran out more than once. My study was exhaustive. When it was time to give it a try, I assembled several kinds of seeds with which to...

I have been mulling over this question and would like to hear what our BYC members have to say. Back in the day, people used to warm bricks and put them in carriages to help keep themselves warm on rides. What about warming bricks and placing the bricks inside the coop to help keep the chickens...
It happened! But all is well for now. A very large hawk landed on a post that stands at one corner of our chicken run. He saw me looking out the window and took off. At the moment, we have netting over the top until we finish the roof. Not preferred! I plan to go out tomorrow and purchase a...
Ugh! I was rolling through life on a comfortable and easy to follow fermenting schedule--and my 6 sweet girls were all benefiting from it. The three-day routine was working like a charm as I would fill, stir, and shift the three large mason jars along my countertop. Then disaster struck: The...
I saw the most interesting behavior thus far from my chickens yesterday! One of the older hens sat in a nesting box along side a young hen. The older one had her wing over the young one until the young hen layed her very first egg. Afterward, the older hen walked out and left the young one alone...
One of my chickens whose age I do not know (believed to be at least 4 years old), layed what appeared to be an egg yesterday that looked like silly putty. It was rubbery and gloppy with no apparent yolk. Over the past week or so, I noticed broken yolk in the nesting area twice. I separated the...
Hello :)
On my first date with my husband, I told him that I wanted chickens. Now, thirty years later, I finally have them! My dream was realized after a serious bout with cancer. Stage 4--colon mets to lungs. We have a lovely chicken coop with a fun run for our girls. Having the girls gets me...
